drinking oil
« on: 01 July 2007, 07:43:13 »

How much oil is 2.2 lit allowed to drink before it's considered too much. Mine uses about 1 lit/ 1000 miles. A asked the dealer bu they could oddly enoug not give me a straight answer.

Every now and then I get one of those oil burning exhaust puffs that I so nostalgically remember from my days of driving 70's and 80's Fords. (Yes, I confess. I used to drive Fords. but it's a long time ago and I was young, stupid and poor.)

Are the valve guides known to fail early on the 2.2 lit? Mine has only run a bit over 75 000 miles. Or could it be something even worse, like the piston rings?

Give it a full breather and throttle body clean.....any crank case pressure is likely to increase oil consumption.

Vx engines rarely have stem seal trouble and bore wear on the 4 pots is generaly a sign of poor maintenance in the past and hence unusual.

My 2.2 2003 now on 96k miles uses 1ltr/8k miles.

It was using that at 42k when i bought it (obviously found out afterwards) and hasnt got any worse.
I put the oil usage down to the fact it had only had its first oil/filter change at around 20k and the 2nd at 42k   :(

I like to see some oil useage as it shows the bores are being well lubed.

Going off topic abit......but i usually do  ::)

I accept your experience Mark.....and if you say its a good thing, then fair enuf  :y

What i have noticed over the last few years of buying second hand vx's to use as taxi's.....and will make a point/conclusion at the end.....

2001 VeccyB bought 2 years ago with just over 110k on it.......serviced as per vx schedule before i bought it.....every 20k miles into the vx dealer (lease car) ......from day 1 this motor used 1ltr of oil every 2k miles .....now with over 210k miles on it.....oil/filter changes every 10k since ive had it....its still using 1ltr/2k miles

2003 Omega.....using oil as above post

2003 VeccyC.....uses some oil....bout the same as Omega...but tho it was a lease car too.....according to service records used to see the vx dealer more frequently than 20k.

So....onto my point.....or conclusion.....

Vx say 20k for service schedule......i think this is just to satisfy the fleet market.....vx know that engine damage will happen doing oil/filter changes only every 20k...but have worked out....that the fleet market are happy with 20k changes....and after 3 years the car goes back....so dont care what state the engine is in.....its lasted that long.....what happens to it after that doesnt matter.

IMO The engines carnt go 20k miles inbetween oil/filter changes definately.....10k they seem too....tho you or others might disagree and need sooner changes....but i have changing oil/filter every 10k on all my vx's.....this appears to have stopped any more engine wear.

Thats my obversation on vx engines......your comments welcomed  :y

I agree on the 20K miles.....the car would need to be doing motorway miles to do that....and no manufacturer can reliably do that change interval either......as is now showing on VW diesels plus many others.

To be honest, I suspect the oil consumption is probably more down to the original manufacturing tolerances and engine design.....and your cars have a few commonalities but, most are very different engine designs.

Some observations of my own, though no firm conclusions...:

First Omega was ex-lease R-Reg 2.5, bought at 10 months old with 20k on the clock and no service history. The 20k with no service was out of spec even according to Vx because at the time the service interval was 10k/1y. I picked this one from several other on offer at the time because the front discs were practically new – no grooves or lip – so the 20k in 10 months must have been done on motorways…

I Had it services by Vx on the day it was bought, and annually/9k afterwards. Ran the car for three years and sold it with 60k on the clock. Oil consumption was nil, apart from one single occasion during a long motorway run the ‘oil low’ message came up on the MID, I pulled over at the services and had to add 1/2L – never happened again so still a mystery.

Incidentally, this was the sweetest reving and most refined Omega V6 I’ve ever seen, I test drove a few others and none was as good, including my current Y-Reg V6 2.6. I put it done to the fact that it did it’s 20k on motorways and had no oil change – sounds odd, but some say that to frequent oil changes on new engine prevents it from bedding-in properly. If this is true then it t definitely made a difference on this car…

My current Omega was bought at 4 months old with just 6k on the clock, I had it serviced annually/9k by Vx since though I supplement it with 4.5k oil changes I do myself.

The engine did not consume any oil up to last year, and now at 6y/50k I loose 1L per 2k miles, some of it was due to camcovers which have now been sorted, but the jury is still out on whether the car has further leaks (most likely…) or just started to consume oil very suddenly - I did not have time to investigate yet, but will look into the oil lose issue soon and will report back…

It seems like the oil consumption on my meega is on the high end, but excessive then(?) But considering I only have 4 pots and you guys have 6, mine should be drinking less ;)

I agree with you on the 20 k miles service intervals. Mine has also been a lease and fully served at the Opel dealer, even with slightly shorter intervals than that. But it still seems to me that 20k is a loooong time for the oil to stay at top lube condition. From now on, my Omega will get new, yummy oil at least every 10k. It's worth every quid.

Does anyone know if the quality of oil (e.g 0/40W, 10/40W, fully synthetic, semi synthetic...) affects the consumption?

I'll go ahead and do the breather and throttle clean before eating Autobahn in July  :y

I personally change my 3.0l Omega's oil every 3 - 4k...  ...Vauxhall's own 10/40 semi synth is cheap enough with a Trade Club card here in the UK...

Hi,

Mine has approx. the same oil consumption (1l for 1k). I use a 10/40 castrol oil and change it every 10k.

I would consider changing it a bit more often...

The back of the manual gives the consumption at 0.6 litrs/1000km so would say your probably bang on for consumption :y
