Fuel System or Fuel Injector Cleaners - Advisable?
« on: 09 July 2007, 17:05:09 »

I am wondering if it would be advisable to put a fuel system cleaner or fuel injector cleaner into my 3.0 with 125,000 miles.  I have had it since 100,000 and I never ran these through it (and doubt it had ever before).  Everything is clean and has used Mobil 1 synthetic for 100,000+ miles.  Does anyone think the cleaner could cause more problems if there is anything that is loosened?  I'd like to run something like this through to keep everything clean and running smooth.  I'm looking at the products at www.stp.com.

Thanks!

It probably can't do any harm although in my experience if it has a seriously clogged injector it will take more than that to clean it. Are you suffering any symptoms or is this just a precautionary?

It's probably not a bad habit to flush some cleaner through it once a year or so. Make sure the fuel filter is changed as required as well, and you'll be doing all you can to prevent problems in this area.

I put a bottle of Forte to half a tank of fuel through mine every 5K miles.

Forte is about the best stuff I have found....not that impressed with STP products as a whole to be honest.

Thanks for the replies.  I have not experienced any problems in this area (just want to keep it this way).  I live in the US, so unless I special order the Forte treatment I am stuck with using something like STP.  I'll give it a try later today...

I've used sonax cleaner in my fathers pickup (Chevrolet S10) with every oil change. I don't notice anything in particular. Probably it helps to keep the fuel system clean, but is difficult to know.
The bottle isn't expensive, so I think it is a good habit to use it.

I too would go along with MDTM's suggestion. I use Forte in my 3.0l which has 144k on the clock.

Ive used STP a fair few times, does seem to make a difference to both smoothness and economy
I have some Forte ( you get it off ebay) for next time, due in a couple of thou miles.
I found less impressive results from redex, so from what I can gather, order of effectiveness, Forte, Stp, Redex.

Would agree - that of any of the additives Forte tends to be the best, and recommended by REAL mechanics...the engine flush is good...but then again, it's hard to tell!

That said, unless you have a real case for concern .ie. dirty injectors they are usually more for a psycological benefit.

OK, I'm a bit of a sceptic with all of the lotions, potions & widgets, as if THOUSANDS of litres of petrol being forced through them doesn't keep them clean - what chance does one litre (diluted 1:50 to1:75) of 'cleaner' have?
