ABS ECU help needed please
« on: 18 July 2007, 20:55:30 »

Hi, apologies if this answered elsewhere .. I've searched and not found the answer ....put it down to newbyness .. :(

This brilliant :) site has confirmed what we (my local garage and me) thought .... my abs ecu needs repairing/replacing - you even tell us how to do it !! Now this and other sites seem to suggest that a refurbishment of mine is best as this does not require a reprogram that a "different" one would.

The question is .. where do I get it refurbished ? Googling is not helping as all I get links to sleasebay or slovenia !!

Any one any ideas if there is a repair facility in the wilts/oxford/berkshire/gloucester area ?? as I'm starting to run up against the clock... we are supposed to leave for France on a towing holiday in 13 days !!

Regards and thanks

Wouldnt worry about the re-program too much
It is 2 mins tops on tech2 to say engine size and transmission type, so if you know what its from, may not even be neccessary at all.
Mine was brand new, so blank when installed, so a slightly different story.

Your location also suggests Brackley is not too far, the location of 'The Boy' and his tech2 for all (cheap) reprogamming needs!

If you get one with the same 'ident' code, should just be 'plug and play', possibly with a quick tech2 after (I'd need to check up on that).

Post 98 ABS ecus do seem to be troublesome, but worth reseating connector in the vain hope it will help.  Tapping the relays gently with a screwdriver handle sometimes helps as well, but probably delaying the inevitable.

Found them yesterday actually. I've still got your address, so I'll endeavour to send them in your direction.

Many thanks to all .. between here, VXON and "preloved" you have greatly helped with the intermittent abs/TC/speedo problems. Despite my local VX main dealer insisting that they had never heard of such a failure and they would need the car for 2 weeks "intensive diagnosis"- your pages had the answer instantly - once I found you !!

They also stated the car was unsafe to drive with the intermittent fault - something I now know to be totaly false, but too late to do anything about - there was so much taken off it was easier to continue than to re-assemble !!

ABS ECU removed and couriered to BBA-Reman who have tested and confirmed it as faulty, they are rebuilding and returning the unit, with a warranty, ASAP. Looks like I'll be able to go to France with the family and caravan as planned !!

Once again .. many thanks .. now I know where to look/ask for help on any future problem - as an aside my local garage now has the site "bookmarked" - methinks they may well visit for information !!

Glad it looks like your holiday is back on!

If the rebuilt unit needs Tech2'ing (if it loses its config), I'm on the Oxon/Bucks/Northants border if your dealer won't/can't/too expensive to do it.

Out of interest what sort of ball park figure does a reconditioned unit via someone like BBA-Reman cost?

Also if the rebuilt unit loses its configuration how would that manifest itself? e.g. is the car undriveable?

Mine was driven on blank for some time.
Basically - No traction control (so light on)
Mine also stalled when idling, for about a minute when the car was cold.

This would indicate ABS is working, as its light is not on.

Can you change just the ABS ECU or do you have to change the pump as well???? I looked on BBA reman and they only list the assy about £425ish. Is this right?
Also if the fault is only intermitent (50/50) will it still be the ECU itself or a dirty/bad conection to the ECU????
Can the connection be cleaned without the major strip down of the left hand side???

@Dazzler ...

I have had just the ECU done .. can't tell you the price as I've not seen an invoice !!

Give BBA-Reman a ring - 01634 230 055 - I'm sure they will try and help.

@TheBoy

I'm told (? :) ) that it shouldn't need reprogramming and that the garage has "access" to whatever is required if it does .....  but I'll keep you in mind if it all changes .. thanks for the offer

regards and once again .. thanks to all
