Strange Running Temp
« on: 30 July 2007, 16:49:49 »

Hi all

I have a bit of a weird one which i hope someone cn shine some light on, i have a 2.0ltr estate which when running has quite eratic temperature it fluctuates all the time regardless of going uphill or down a motorway, it will get up to 95 quite quickly from cold and from then will range between 95 and 100 but never overheats.

when sitting it will often get to 100 but then cool down due to the fans.

also i may be being dumb but when i have the ac on it runs hotter than normal ie when normally at 95 it will be running at 97.

i have had the coolant sniffed about 6 weeks ago all ok so hopefully not the dreaded HG!!!

cheers all

Hi and welcome!

My 2L also fluctuated quite a lot, and certainly got hotter in slow traffic.   I think its normal to run a little hotter when the ac is on.

It may be your stat is sticking a bit but to be honest I wouldn't worry about it from what you describe.

Cheers

Ian

My 98 2.5 V6 also does the same, always runs at or just below 95, but in hotter weather will fluctuate a lot between 95 and 100, never had it over heat so far.

My 2.0 doesnt have this problem, It seems to run at around 90 once it's been running for a few minutes, if i keep a constant speed for a short while on an open road and keep the revs at minimum, it can cool to less than 85, never really goes over 92 max that i've noticed

hmmmm i think im slightly paranoid as my 53 vectra sits about 85 all the time, rarly has the fans running,

i wonder if a coolant change is in order as it does look quite dirty and possibly some new coolant will lubricate the thermostat.

any suggestions.

its a 99 omega by the way if that makes any difference???

I would suggest dumping the coolant, good flush through and changing thermostat at the same time.

Thats too hot tbh, shouldn't really rise above mid point on gauge.  Flush coolant, if possible with some proper flush...
