Gaskets ;)

Use only genuine VX gaskets and BLACK sealant... it's important to use the right stuff or you'll be doing the job again.

There is a how-to in the maintenance guides section, which has part numbers.

The black stuff from Vaux is what is recommended, and use genuine gaskets the pattern ones aren't as good and will leak. See the maintenance guide section for a how to.

If you get all original GM parts, i.e. gaskets, o-rings, and sealant, and strictly follow the maintenance guide, then you might get two or three years of leak-free camcovers... any deviation from that, e.g. non-original parts or other shortcuts, and you will need to redo the job in less than 3 months.... good luck with it and keep in mind help is available on this site if you need it.

...... and clean out the breather system first.  If the internal engine fumes do not have anywhere to go when the breathers are blocked, they can force oil out through the camcover gaskets, hence the leaks.  Sometimes if the leak is not too bad, simply doing a breather clean (again, howtoo in maint guides) will reduce/stop the leak.

Also, clean out the old oil from the plugwells as it affects the spark plug caps, breaking down the insulation and leading to misfire probs......  :y

Good advice. I was originally only going to do one of mine (driver's side) as it was clearly shot and the other one looked OK. I decided I'd do both anyway and I'm glad I did as the passenger side one was almost as bad, it just wasn't noticable before taking the plug leads out.
