Engine Stalls

Two weeks ago I stopped at traffic lights and the engine stalled and would not restart. Called the AA out and when he connected his diagnostic kit to the car it registered no fault - yet the car still would not start! After proding around for 3 quarters of an hour he retride starting the engine and guess what it started. Over the last 2 weeks the engine has stalled on me twice, fortunately I was able to pull off the road and when I tried to restart it, it did  :) I know intermitent faults are difficult to find but is there anyone that has had a similar problem and has been able to rectify this problem.

a stalling auto....does it start first time - easily, and how does it idle?

Yes.  Before the stall the engine first starts ok and runs/idles smoothly.  After the stall, the engine on the 1st occasion after the AA call out started on the 1st or 2nd try.  The 2nd stall it took about 5 attempts before the engine fired.  Yesterday and today the engine has been a good boy!

would crank sensor cause it to not start after stalling, and maybe blocked breathers/ICV/throttle body cause the stall in the first place?

mine stalled a couple of times, had breathers, throttle body and ICV cleaned and its never given me a problem since

i also heard of a certain fault that wouldnt flash up any codes, but cant remember which one, could i be wrong? i usually am

We had similar in the 2.2. Car would start fine, then stall, then loads of attempts and cranking to restart.
Since a service, and breathers and throttle body clean, all has been well.

I believe the Cam sensor can also cause similar issues.

Or if you're really unlucky, a knackered throttle mechanism.

Both of which his equipment should have picked up.

Prior to the initial engine stall (ie before AA call out ) there were occasions where it took a few cranks before the engine fired. I thought nothing of it until the last few days. The car was a bad boy today, yep it stalled on me :(  :'(

Ah thanks for that.
How difficult is it to replace and where is it located. Reason this is my first Vauxhall since I have had it from when it was only 6 months old I am very very  pleased with it - up until now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ::)

Must be contageous !

Started mine yesterday morning, no problem. Drove 20 miles, parked up for about an hour, then refused to start (turning over but not firing).

After 5 attempts decided to lock/unlcok doors, just in case the immobiliser was playing silly beggars - it started !

Drove further 30 miles, smooth as silk. Parked up (9th floor in car park). Came back 90 minutes later and wouldn't start, even with unlock/lock attempts. Finally fired after about 20 attempts (was glad, as had payed for car park and only had 15 minutes to leave !

Drove 50 miles home, again smooth as anything. Parked up, left it unlocked. Started okay-ish but then cut out 4 or 5 times within 1 mile - ususally on run-down or idle. Last time took ages to get started, but then ran okay.

Parked up, stopped engine and then re-started, no problem. Left it 30 minutes and it started first time again !!!

Haven't tried it again since. Will see how it is in the morning, although I won't really trust it, even if it does fire, first time !

No EMS lights staying on after starting, so not sure if any codes will be stored. Had new crank sensor less than 6 months ago.

Argghhh. Any suggestions?

As expected, the car didn't start this morning ! Lots of starter motor, but not firing !

Have  done the 'paperclip test, which showed code 19 - Crank Sensor and Code 73 - MAF.

The Crank sensor is still under warranty...............but I need to get it there ! Any ideas on part numbers for the MAF (I've got one number 281002184 - but this shows as being for a 2.6) ?

Don't think the MAF would prevent starting, but may be wrong. Will see if there are any leaks around the MAF, but my money is on the Crank Sensor ........................... again !!!!!

Any other suggestions ?
