I didn't have to swap mine round because I was simply re-fitting the driver's door mechanism that had broken off and was sitting in the bottom of the door. However I decided to seperate the strap from the mechanism so I could clean and re-grease it properly, and I could both remove and re-fit the check strap easily enough just using my hands. I just angled the check strap to minimise the amount of tension generated -- i could only get it as far as the first notch, but this is fine as that's the fully open position anyway which is where it needs to be to install it back into the door. Works a treat now just like the passenger door which has never caused any problems.
Saying that, the outer repair plate needs to be cut down quite a lot, or you won't be able to fit it into the cutout on the door. For this a vice and a good hacksaw are very useful, as is an angle grinder to round off the corners. You can do the corners with a file, but it'll take at least 10 times longer!
