Get a Tractor!
They get hotter faster ;)

Shouldn't do.

Mine does, much faster than the 2.0 Petrol that I had for a couple of months after the Diesel was drowned in the floods!

What temps does your tractor:

Cruise at
Reach when booting
Reach in traffic

I think it has cooling issues.  100C on the gauge (109C in reality) is dangerously close to its 'safe' zone (The BMW unit is classed safe to 110C).

By comparison, what are your equivalent temperatures?

Can't quote cruising yet, as only changed stat yesterday, and not taken for a cruise (old stat 'cruised' at 90/100mph at 85 ish).

Booting: 97 is highest since changed stat (and I don't have my viscous on there at moment)
Traffic: 96 - leccy fans drag back to 94

Is it worth bothering with the viscous fan? They've always seemed a bit wasteful to me.
If the electric fan keeps it under control in this climate I wouldn't bother putting it back. 99% of the time you'll be moving fast enough to get sufficient air flow through the rad anyway.

As long as the tractor has the usual setup of aux. fans that run with the air con on I reckon it's probably superfluous.

I agree, though since putting a working stat back in it runs slightly warmer...

I'm beginning to wonder if my electric fans are kicking in at higher speeds at higher temperatures
I know that they run normally because I have previously taken the grill off to look at them turning
Experimentation required I think!
IW
PS I don't have air-con

Check they still work - I had a tractor here on Sunday which occasionally suffered overheating. Turns out that the fan switch had failed recently (I had seen them working a few months ago).

That's probably just because the stat is now working properly though. Once the radiator has started to struggle to bring the temperature down the stat should be fully open so it's out of the picture. The only thing I wonder is if they put it there to shift heat soak from the turbo under the bonnet but, again, most of the time there'll be plenty of airflow.

They do generate a lot of heat - its a 80C stat, and the operating temp seems to suggest it should run in the 92 - 95C range

Am I right in thinking that there are 2 switches?
If so, which one is the low speed & which the high speed?

Depends on if you have A/C. If you do, short out the top one, just under top coolant hose, with a paperclip, should bring on low speed fans.

I don't have A/C so are there 1 or 2 switches?
I assume that the fans are 2 speed - is this correct?

Of top of my head, not sure about non a/c cars.  Possibly a single switch with 3 connectors. There is a wiring diag in Haynes if you want to check
