Definitely a 24mm socket. Been and bought one. Still needed to lie on my back with both feet on the breaker bar before the barsteward would move though.

:D Bit of gentle persuasion always does the trick...

Unbelievably, the dealers had a replacement housing cover in stock!! So 2.6 meega back on the road!

Thanks for the advice guys  :y

Just as a matter of interest, how much did it cost?

It is possible to convert to a "normal" cannister type filter, I intend to do a How2 on my next oil change   :y

When I first did mine we ended up with a breaker bar and piece of scaff tube on the socket and a chain filter wrench wrapped around the housing. Luckily I was using a mates pit so access was easy.
Obviously the last mechanic was illiterate as the torque setting is cast in the lid.

You would have thought so if you'd seen us taking mine off, after the housing started to undo its mounting nut.
Got torqued back on rather carefully I can assure you.

had this on my second omega, some muppet did the lid up F.T. - so the whole assembly unscrewed when trying to remove the lid. At the time I didn't have a strap wrench to counterhold the casing, so I ended up turning it whilst pulling down on it at the same time. Eventually this unwound the hollow bolt that secures the back of the casing to the block. Removing the lid from the casing then required use of a vice and 2 foot breaker bar - even then it needed a bit of persuasion!

Fortunately after replacing the housing (torque the hollow bolt to 45Nm), refitting the filter and tightening the lid to the correct 15Nm torque, on the next oil change it came off easy peasy  :y

As has been said before, tightening it to silly torques doesn't actually have any bearing on how oil tight it makes the casing anyway.

For info... Part was £17.50 plus Vat.

By the way, the "square" hole that takes the 3/8 ratchet now has rounded corners so the ratchet no longer fits - glad I got the 24mm socket!

Perhaps that's why mine hasn't got it, perhaps having the square cut out of the hex makes it weaker?

Some French cars have a very similar cutout in the sump bung - perhaps the same tool (comes in different sizes) will fit... though I'd prefer to use a hex, far less likely to fracture, even on non-French plastic... ;)

you can buy 'sump plug spanners' which I think are the square type.   Maybe that would fit..

Having read this thread I'm glad that for now both my cars have old tech, cheaper, spin on filters :)

Yep, sounds familiar, I had to get a 24mm socket and a breaker bar from Halsfords before I could complete my first DIy filter change following years on Vx main dealer service and a book full of stamps...
