Hello!

My parents have just bought a new motor and have decided to pass their 2001 2.0ltr GLS Estate onto me as it suits our family needs better than my current Mazda 626.

Now I've been passed this Omega (which I am very gratefull) I would like to know a bit more about it. I've not found much in the way of info specific to the 2.0ltr GLs and I want to make sure it's running as good as possible. I've always owned Jap cars and found I have virtually no major problems in many many miles and I would like the same service from this motor.

It has 61k on the clock (my parents were the second owner 4 years ago) and it has a full service history - which is nice.  

I've found various things to look out for like the breaking door straps etc, and with such a good motor, I want to do as much preventative maintenance as possible. What sort of things should I be looking at doing?

When I drove it recently it felt pretty lifeless below 3000rpm with not much in the way of pulling power. Is this normal for the 2.0ltr? It's a big motor I know, but it's feels quite underpowered compared to the (1999) 626. It had new plugs and air filter on the last service in Aug, so I don't think it's that. Any suggestions / tweaks I should consider? What sort of MPG can I expect?

 I'd be minded to put a 3.2 engine and running gear in from a plodwagon, but thats just me... welcome to the forum, anyhow.

 I assume, being 2001, it's a facelift model?

no experience of the 626, but the 2.0 isn't exactly the fastest car... but then my only other car was a 1.0 corsa!

i'm currently in persuit of (at the very least) a 2.5 elite, more power, and more toys!

what mileage has it got? is it due for a service? you could always check for air leaks and other stuff that make it feel slower than it should be, but i dont know much about engines, just that mine runs fine for a 2.0

I went a similar route to you..

I had a 97 626 2.0 Estate, nice car, big & roomy, reliable, bland
Went to a 98 3.0 Omega Estate

Different engine I know, but the Omega is a lot more powerful (& thirsty) than the old 626
Also afraid to say it has not been as reliable, but a price I've been willing to pay.

For starters I would do oil & filter change, fuel filter, (air filter, spark plugs you say have been done).
Also clean the throttle body & breathers.
Do that lot & I think it will have a bit more go in it.

You didn't say which 626 you had, but as the omega is bigger & heavier, I expect it will be a little slower than the 626

Also, worth doing a paperclip test, check for any codes which may point if anything is not right.
Also is it Manual or Auto?  If auto, there is a software upgrade for the box which makes them feel more responsive and smoother

.. Check it had a cam belt change at 40,000 too. If it's not mentioned in the service history it's worth doing anyway to be on the safe side.

Yep a 2.0l is fine alittle under powered if you want to blast from start to stop and start again, but its fine sitting at 70 or above cruising down the motorway.

Dont be scared to take the revs right up on a 2.0l to get the most out of it i hit 6,000 most times.

but yep make sure the cambelt is in it 40,000 range or 4 year old range

Here here - do like I did and s0d the increasing petrol prices!    

If it helps, I used to have a mk3 Astra Sport with the 1.8 16v ecotec lump in it.  Went like stink, but no real grunt below 3k rpm.  Think it's just a characteristic of the 4-pot ecotec engine really.

Forgot to mention, we also have a 2.2 Meega,
That is also faster than the 626 was, so properly running and serviced, your 2.0 should be very similar at least.

It's a manual and it feels much more comfortable than the 626 (2.0ltr Lxi)

The cam belt was changed at 45k together with the front disks and pads - I've got garage receipts for these. I was looking through the history last night and it seems to have had quite a bit done to it in the 4 years my parents had it, even though they have only done 20k in it. This is a little worrying, because I don't mind paying for normal serving items to keep it running well, but I don't want to have to spend extra dosh just because stuff needs doing to it. i.e. it's wishbone bushes done, brakes, new idle control valve and several other bits and bobs that I can't remember.

I've always had jap cars in the passed and I've not had any problems, I'm hoping for the same service from this Omega. From what I've read, they'll do the miles, but at what cost?

Brakes ARE service items........and so are bushes on our knackered and speed hump ridden roads.

Idle valve is indicative of minimal servicing and a poor mechanic (they can be cleaned)
