oil change

i wanna change my engine oil and gear oil on my opel omega 1999 mv6 pre facelift

what would be the best option for both . i mean weight and brand

Vauxhall's own Semi Synthetic 10w40 is the best value. If you've got TC you can get 4 5l bottles for the price of 3 :y

agreed, it also doesn't seem to suffer with condensation on the filler cap as much as some 'other' oils.

there is a recomendation for gearbox oil and filters in the maint guide on doing the job I think.

Gear oil depends on whether auto or manual
Auto - Dexron 3 ( you will need replacement sump gaskets and optionally filter at the same time)
Manual - is a very specific Vx product which has changed several times - I think recomendation is to use the latest, no matter what age of car.

what if i use a 20 weight instead of the 40 will it help cause it's thinner
and for gear oil i have an auto is dexron 3 necessary or there are some better ones out there?

30 is the minimum weight specified for these engines. Vx do a synthetic 5w30. Bit more pricy than the semi and, TBH, if you're going to change it frequently, doesn't make much odds.

The Auto Box needs a Dexron III oil. This is the specification of the oil so there are good and bad quality oils around bearing that specification.

A the minute our Vauxhall dealer has a bit of a sale on 4 x 5ltrs off oil for the price of 3, plus oil filters are only around a £1 :y

Vx semi 10/40, changed regular (4 - 5k) is excellent, and cheap :y
