2.2 Sounds like a tractor :(
« on: 07 December 2007, 10:07:03 »

Just had a call from a stranded Mrs Jimbob  :(

100 yards from school, car on accerlation the car started jumping, no engine lights.
drops the little fella off, gets back in,
restart it to leave, car is jumping / shaking, sounds like a tractor
Engine management light lit, and Auto Gearbox check.

She turns off at this point and calls me.

I start it up, engine sounds sweet as a nut, but is vibrating quite a bit.
EML still on, Check gearbox still on.

I drive it home slowly like a manual.
Get the cheapo tech2 and have and old P1613 (immob) and a new P0353 - Ignition Coil 3 Incorrect Signal
Couldnt read gearbox :(
Gearbox was clunky to change, initial thought thrust washer?  or is this maybe a red herring.

Help  :(

Where should I start, check the spark plugs?

Correctly Diagnosed as per usual  :y

Plug 3, damp
Plug 4, Swimming

So now what?
Ive tried the wells as best I can with kitchen towel, and dried cpp pack.
Should I dry more thoroughly with hair dryer?

should I put cpp pack back on and see what happens?
or am I likely to need new cpp / plugs?

Cheers

That should be enough to get it running properly but it could do with a decent run to thoroughly heat the head etc to drive off any remaining dampness or the missfire might return at the next cold start.
Where did the water come from? scuttle / wiper holes? Can you stop it happening again?

Now put some sealent around the rubber that the wiper arm studs stick through on the scuttle.

Silicon (sikaflex is good) your looking to seal the rubber part to the scuttle moulding

In a past life I used to use french chalk or talc to track the path of any water leak, if you have access to a puffer pack of Johnsons baby powder then try to get a thin dusting around and under the scuttle. any water drips clean off the powder so you can see where it started from.

Jimbob drop AA a PM he had the exact same problem, he seal the base of his wiper blades with a special silcone thingy.

Seams to affect later facelifts, both mine and my dads have never had problem with water in the plugs.
