Nearly stacked it this morning..........
« on: 05 October 2007, 10:08:11 »

Driving to work this morning, I came up behind a tractor with one car already behind it. Tractors crawling along about 10-15mph, get to a straight section of the road with nothing coming the other way but the car in front won't move to overtake. I wait a while and still the car in front won't pull out to overtake, so I check it's still all clear, indicate and pull out to overtake and just as I'm along side the car in front she pulls out without indicating forcing me up the opposite verge and I just about managed to hold it and got past. The bloody idiot then has the nerve to race up behind me with lights flashing and horn blaring!! What's wrong with these bloody idiots!! >:( >:(

I'm lucky the front offside tyre didn't blow when I hit the opposite verge and will probably need to have my tracking checked again now having recently had it all done at WIM. :'(

Glad you are OK Bob.   :y

I normally give a 2 second-ish headlamp flash when I am in a position to actually overtake past the slower vehicles, particularly so that the headlamp shows in the drivers door mirror.  That way there is no reason why they did not see me coming and they cannot confuse the headlamp signal with an invitation to pull out.

Fair chance the other driver got as big or bigger fright than yourself, hence the tailgating/horn/headlamp thing......

You probably was in her blind spot so she didnt see you, but she still shouldve checked, glad to hear you are ok & hope the car hasn't been damaged, as for flashing headlamps  that could make the other driver think you are letting them pull out to overtake, sounding the horn would be a better option she & the tractor driver would then know you were there giving you a few seconds to go past. I will go get my fire extiguisher cause I'm bound to be shot down in flames over my opinion ;)

I suppose the correct thing to have done would have been to stay behind until she decided to move or the tractor turned off (which might not have been for miles). Some drivers are very hesitant to overtake anything without being given an invitation. :-? This makes any cars following very frustrated (as with me) and you can't always predict what they're going to do.
Even the van behind me was getting frustrated and moving out to look for an overtaking opportunity. In reality, if these drivers can't pull off a simple safe overtaking manouvre with confidence, they really shouldn't be on the road. :-/

I reckon more than half of drivers dont know what different sequences of flashing beams means, especially since these days driving instructors only want to tell you they're there to warn others of your presence, so as not to encourage people to use them as invitation to manoever

To clarify what I meant by a 2 secondish headlamp flash, its the pulling back of the indicator stalk to illuminate the main beams for a constant 2 seconds or so, not to be confused with a demented flashing like a morse code student on quadruple overtime......

Ultimately, the use of headlamps and horn mean only one thing - I am here.....  Your descision as to whether headlamps or horn in what place.  Personally, I think headlamp is the better option is the scenario described but each to their own...   :y

Markie - yes, training coming to the fore again!!   ;D

yeah i'm just saying plenty of idiotic people would still attempt to pull out infront of you even with a full two second hold on the stalk, assuming you were letting them go

It never ceases to amaze me how many people overtake without a clue what's behind them. Some people seem to think they're the only car on the road.

I've had the same thing happen many times in the Westfield. That has a loud exahust and is normally doing 5,000 RPM plus on a floored throttle during such a manoevre. Say what you like about blind spots (I was taught to look over my shoulder) but I would have thought the sound would be a clue.

If they were regularly looking in the mirror they would spot drivers behind whose intention is to overtake long before they get the opportunity.
