ENGINE WON'T STOP - PROBLEM NOW FOUND

Tunrs out that the harness to the power sounder wasn't routed correctly and had been trapped by the top shock mount, wore through and caused all manner of probles.

Just throught i'd share this with you

Ahh, :o

I really don't like the wiring of the supplies to the power sounder. They are poxy wires and only fused by one of the 80 amp PDS fuses (if fitted - only on later cars). I remember seeing a couple of Omegas that had caught fire where the problem looks to have originated in this area too :o

Sounds to me like the switched and unswitched supplies shorted together :o

If it's protected by an 80 Amp fuse would it not be sensible to fit a lower rated fuse in line with the sounder to avoid the possibilities of fire??

Ideally the wire should be protected by a smaller fuse at the point it is fed. The fuse is there to protect the wire after all. I really don't know why it's not fused.

Maybe this is some requirement of a Thatcham approved alarm? Seems pretty pointless when it is protected by an internal backup battery anyway, and it's not hard to disconnect the vehicle battery.

Fitting an inline fuse in each supply by the power sounder would be no bad thing, but it still leaves the majority of the length of wire unprotected. It would offer some insurance against a catastrophic failure of the power sounder, though.
