Odd set of tyres
« on: 23 February 2008, 20:09:31 »

After washing the Mig today I thought I would use some tyre shine which I bought months ago.
Came up nice and shiny and while I was doing it I noticed and noted the following about my set of tyres:

Front

N/S - Avon ZV3 - 215/55 R16 97H

O/S - Goodyear Eagle NCT 5 - 215/55 R16 93V

Rear

N/S and O/S - Prima Tigar - 225/55 R16 95V

Questions

1) Would the different makes and speed ratings of the front tyres affect the steering/handling as it does seem to have a mind of its own sometimes.

2) Would it be best to swap both fronts for both rears to get a matching pair on the front?

3) Does it matter that the fronts are 215/55 and the rears are 225/55?

4) Has anyone else had experience with these makes of tyre?

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance  :y

In my opinion

1 yes   if im right the nsf is a rotational tyre and the os isn't.  i would also get rid of both of the fronts as they arnt the correct size and the ns is the wrong speed rating(can invalidate insurance).

2 no as if your are running different size tyres you should always have the largest on the rear.

3  depends some cars are ok with differnt sizes others dont like it. again might invalidate your insurance.

4 cant help you as never run on any of them.

hope this helps.

I agree with lee,I like to have same name ,size & speed rating on each axle so if you have to or like to switch end to end you can.

Thanks Lee, I couldn't see any direction arrow on the front tyres but both the rears are directional and are the right way round.
So basically get two new front tyres (225/55) to match the rears?
Any suggestions on a decent budget tyre?

Edit: Should I get speed rating 95V to match the rears?

So to take it from there....

I would definately be swapping the front 2 as they are the incorrect size for the vehicle. As lee said, the speed rating is also incorrect.

On a personal note, I am a stickler to be honest when it comes to tyres. I don't mind spending a little more given that 'your life rides on those tyres' and 'it's your only point of contact with the road'!

.....therefore, i'd see if a tyre shop will do a good deal on a full set of 4 tyres, put 2 on the front (they hardly wear at all) and store the other two new tyres in your garage ready for when the backs wear out.

i cant really recomend a budget tyre as i allways try to run michelins.

I would also check what speed rating should be on there as mine has w rated all round and i think that is standard fitment (someone will confirm).

Can also concur michelins wear the best so personally think they're worth a little extra.

V rating I think is standard fit for a 2.2 but I notice A&J also have a c*r*v*n   ::) so maybe worth a higher rated tyre?

Thanks both  :y Lee what Michelins do you use and do you get any tramlining/wandering?

Can anyone explain the speed rating codes to me and advise which I should be running on?

Hi,
I had a mish mash of all sorts on my pre sadly neglected motor. There were not two the same make or size, but strangely enough steering was fine.
As Davlad says, tyres are your only contact with the road.
I bit the bullet and went for full set Michelin Primacy HP, you need W rating.
Ther'e not cheap, but give me peace of mind.

I just bought some Kuhmo spt ku13 tyres for my mv6 and am well pleased with them the quality is as good as most premium tyres and for your size they are £57.30 each to your door.

Michelin Pilot Primacy & Michelin Primacy HP. Straight as a die, grip well and nice and quiet.

If you want to spend less, I suppose the Pirellis are good value for money. Alot of the guys use Goodyear Eagle F1's also.

Had some VX fitted 'Kleber' branded tyres that wore out fast, Dunlop SP9000s used, grippy but also didn't wear fantastic.
