Auto Box Fluid Change
« on: 10 March 2008, 17:08:07 »

Hi Guys,
just collected my filter and gaskets set from auto transmission specialist. asked them while I was there about Dexron III fluid. I said I need 8.4 litres. Mechanic told me although Capacity is 8.4 litres you won,t get much more than 4 litres out by draining and removing both sumps. He says that the pump and the torque convertor hold most of the remaining 4 ish litres.

Don't want to buy 2 x 4.5 litre cans if I only need one. Specialist seems to think I will only need 4.5 litres at most.

Anybody done this change recently who could give me a pointer to how much it will take.

Lastly , if this is the case ,then surely you are only changing half of the fluid ?    regards,  Big Al

I did it a few weeks ago.....I used about 6 litres.

Did spill some, but not a lot.

Yes you are changing about 1/2 - 3/4, but normally enough.

If it is very bad you could change it again in 500 or so miles and really dilute the old stuff.

Mine was at 115000 and th 1/2 change make a big difference, I wont be doing another one, dont think it would be worth it.

Remember you need the engine running when you do the final top up.

Changed mine in January, used 12 litres of 'real Dexron 3', empty and clean the main gearbox sump, replace with just 4 bolts, fill sump and run engine in all gears, empty sump, repeat, then on the third fill you will have approx 85% new fluid  :y :y

You should in theory be able to disconnect the return line from the cooler  and run the engine briefly to flush the old fluid out of the TC and cooler lines. Common practice with other vehicles but I've never come across anyone who's tried it on an Omega.  :-/

For a few extra minutes (if it works) it would make the flushing operation quite a bit more effective.

Hi
Did mine recently. Both sumps and filter change used about 7 litre's,
although I think I swallowed at least one, and if you have a nice drive
do it elsewhere. Gasket stuck partly to gearbox partly to sump when
lowering it, messy.

12 litres of 'Dexron 3' £45-00, not GM but up to spec. A motor factor on Autobahnstormers offered a better price but delivery was a problem. Local Vauxhall dealer offer only 'Dexron 2' at £7+vat plus a litre, 5 litres at £30+vat, joke ! . New Filter and gaskets £30 + postage again from Autobahnstormers - Dave kember.

Hi
Did mine recently, mechanic used around 4.5 litres run engine for a bit then drained and refilled helping to renew any fluid still around, some people also do a third change. I bought 10 litres paid around £28 still got plenty left for any topping up that may be needed, either in box or if power steering fluid level drops.(dex 3)

Personally I wash the filters out in Paraffin.

As for the naughty stealer telling you what they did, its not the same.

The auto box uses DexIII and the power steering uses DexII.

Plus, don't get the fluid from the dealer, get it from opieoils (www.opieoils.co.uk) as it s better quality and cheaper.
