Timing belt kit...

Hi all,

I need to change my timing belt and ordered the kit from Autovax.  Arrived this morning and its a SKF NT05001 (VKMA 05500).  I guess it is the correct item for my car and matches the eng no: range.

Is SKF original equipment part(s) ? Is this OK to use?

Looking for guidance...

.....By the way bought the the Cambelt CD too. Its brilliant !!!
Can the cameraman share the details of the Camcorder used to film please? It is so clear...need to replace my 9 year old JVC.

Can't help with SKF gear, but someone will shortly, I'm sure.

I have fitted one of these myself. SKF are a respected manufacturer of bearings so the pulleys should be OK and I believe this kit has a Gates belt which will also be fine, with the added bonus that it's got markings on. :y

I should have added that there are still variations with model year. I supplied engine numbers when I ordered and they got the right kit (the one that was previously on the car was wrong!).

Just have a careful look at the cast plate that holds the two upper tensioners to make sure it is the same, and also check that the lower tensioner is adjustable if the current one is (later cars have a fixed idler here, mounted about 1/2 way up the belt run. earlier cars with the idler just under the water pump have an adjustable one.)

The video camera used was a Sony TRV900E and is also around 9 years old.   ;)

Hadn’t used it in a while so set everything to auto hence Mark’s white gloves bouncing the exposure about a bit.   ;D

The genuine kits also use SKF bearings....as do the gates and Contitech kist to.

Rightly or wrongly i have found that the adjustable pulley is identical in size to the non adjustable one, so i have fitted the adjustable one to the later engines which makes life so much easier for bank adjusting ;)

I've done several engines with the non-adjustable idler and the nearside bank has timed perfectly every time [size=8]or been a tooth out[/size].

I guess this is why it was deemed surplus to requirements. Depends what method you're used to using I guess. There's probably no harm in having an adjustable idler there. :-/

The SKF kit i brought one had the adjustable one so i stuck it on and have done so ever since ;)

Hi All,  As i have worked for SKF man and boy for 37 years its nice to hear we are held in high regard. I could " have a word" and see if there is any chance of a discount for the cambelt kit. I have managed to get wheel bearings and even hub assemblies in the past for my own and friends cars. Even if i can get them for what we call manufacturers price this may well be a lot cheaper than one from suppliers with their mark up. I will make enquiries and post a reply as soon as i can. :y

Hi Kevin, You seem to be on the same wavelength as me regarding seeing if i can get some kits for a cambelt party. lol. Don't know what VX charge for them but sure, if i can, i will be able to get them a lot cheaper. Will try and work out a sales pitch before i go into work tomorrow. ;D How many do you think will be needed  roughly? Just thought it would be good to get a rough number in case they ask. Of course this could be an on going request as well. I wasn't sure if we supplied VX with cambelt kits as a genuine VX part. I looked through my catalogue when i bought my miggy estate a few months ago to see what bearings etc i could get should i need one. Looked quite a comprehensive range. We used to supply all the motor manufacturers from Luton years ago but we went over from taper roller and ball bearing production to roller and spherical bearings and so bearings/kits we need for cars now have to be sent from central stores in Belgium. Usually takes about a week if they have them in stock so will need a few weeks notice if i can get them.
