Comedy rocker gasket replacement quote
« on: 08 April 2008, 16:19:00 »

Hi everyone, my V6 has the usual rocker gasket leak, which i have been putting off having done for a while now.

Anyway, i finally got round to getting a quote from my VX dealer for the work, now bearing in mind that he has never seen the car, he reckoned about 600 quid plus he wants to put a NEW cam cover on too :D
He tried to tell me that a warped cover was what would be causing the leak!

I told him about cleaning out the oil breathers, but he didn't seem too interested in that. Oh, and he hinted at maybe having to do other, unspecified work too.

Anyone know of a good garage in or arround Edinburgh, that won't try to rip me off like these guy's?

cheers

Iain

the warping covers is true i believe they are plastic and plastic does go brittle over time with heat! my local stealer bayliss quoted 180 all in for the work

i did it myself for £50 trade vx parts

yes clean the breathers out otherwise they will just die again!

Sometimes the rocker covers do warp. Had to have mine replaced aswell as the gaskets on my previous Omega but not at the cost you've been quoted! :o

Granted, i'm sure sometimes they DO need changed, but he claimed that was defo. the cause of the leak.
He hasn't even seen the car.

He's probably talking cr@p then. If like me, you can't do them yourself you're better off finding a decent independent garage that will do them at a fraction of VX's charges.

Warping is rare but does happen.  Normally, cause is due to overtightening the bolts.  I think is only something in the 8 to 10 NM range, so not a lot....

Use gen VX gaskets otherwise you will be redoing them sooner rather than later.

Clean the breathers as well, the gaskets are the weak point if the breather system is blocked.  Excess pressure has to go somewhere if it cant go where its supposed to go...

Good guides available here for cleaning the breathers and here for the rocker seals.....

Yeah, i'm in the same boat as you mechanicaly mate, i havn't the skill, tools or time to do these jobs. I prefer to trust garages and folk who know their way round the engine bay.

;D If Dick Turpin demanded 600 notes for the work, he might get it ;)

The dealer certainly is not.

The Job Realy isnt that hard and as for trusting garages :o

Your realy lucky if you've got a garage you can trust , but for peace of mind do it yourself :y There are good guides on this site and plenty of people to give advice . Just use genuine VX parts .

Hi
A quick word of warning, I kept putting off fixing the leak until I had time.
On the way home from work one day I had to overtake and gave it a boot full in sports mode as I got passed the gasket failed and dump the oil all over the hot exhaust result, a fire, and lots of smoke.

I put the fire out but had to change a few bits of plastic including the cam cover etc and the sound proofing on the bonnet all damage by the fire.
My advise is don't put off changing the gasket and fixing the leak

Iain, what one in edinburgh did you go, I'm always getting bits from the VX in sighthill. They told me to change the cam covers as well. "Cam covers are warped, you can see them when you put them in a flat surface".

Its funny that because I changed my own gaskets and there is no way in hell to see the warped cam covers....... spark plug holes get in the way of getting it on a flat surface. Bunch of bandits in Edinburgh.

Yes mate, RV Vauxhall Sighthill >:( total bunch of bandits

It's now booked in at clan in Edinburgh, a reputable independant VX specialist. Reckons about 190-200 quid, oh and his labor rate is only £30!!
