Knocking noise
« on: 15 April 2008, 07:07:52 »

Firstly i would like to apologise for all the questions. So heres two more  ;D I have got a light knocking noise coming from bottom of engine/gearbox on tickover.  :-/ When I slowly raise the rpm the noise goes after about 2000rpm. It also disappears after a good run (10 miles to work)  :-? Any ideas guys??

Also I had an oil leak from cam cover gaskets which was leaking quite badly. The oil used to start smoking from the heat of the engine. This was sorted on saturday but im still getting smoke from engine after a good run (again 10 miles to work) Is this the old oil burning off still??

TIA  :y

The noise may well be a tired oil pump, hence when revs increase and or the oil gets hot it stops :-/

Autobox oil pump? It's...inside the autobox. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1183142571 STEP 9 - oil pump.
It might be TC as well but I don’t know what kind of sounds it makes when knackered.
It's really hard to tell where the knocking sound is comming from (might be engine). You have to get under the car and check it (safety first)

FWIW, I have noticed a light knocking at idle from the sump area that disappears as soon as the engine is lifted above idle on several V6s I have worked on. I have no idea what it might be but I doubt it's worth tearing the engine apart for.

Any history of the engine having flush through it?

Was the oil very dirty at any point?

If yes to any of the above then its worth dropping the bottom sump pan off (not hard) and checking for crudd in the pan and on the oil pickup.
