2.6 V6 MPG Figures
« on: 09 May 2008, 13:56:57 »

I know this is an old topic and there are other threads but I just wanted a few expert opinions on my MPG of my 2.6 MV6 AUTO

Basically round town I struggle to get 19mpg, usually around 18.2 to 18.6 - Its costing me like £30 to do about 110 miles does this seem right?

Thats driving normal with the odd mad moment on the throttle!! If I really drive slow and hardly touch the throttle I can get 20 - 21 now and then but It ussually take to much concentration to do it!! hehe!! like when clarkson was driving that Audi to scotland and back on Top Gear!!

Now the reason I ask is that I have heard 3.0 and 3.2 owners state they get better mpg than that round town which keeps making me think that summat ain't quite right even though it runs like a dream & never misses a beat!! I know the AUTO doesn't help but just thought I'd get some feedback.

I have been told that you can't do anything with these engines on the computer regarding fuel tuning etc.

Is it just my driving or what?

Does sound a bit low.

I average low 20's round town.

Presume Air Filter / Fuel Filter / Spark Plugs changed recently?

Do you ever use additives in the fuel?  maybe worth a dose of Forte gas treatment, can help a little

It gets serviced every six months but couldn't say for sure when plugs etc were changed, never used additives in the fuel never sure about them to be honest.

What is Forte gas then?

its along the lines of stp / redex cleaners, but generally perceived to be better.

You cant buy it in the shops, ebay is a good bet.

I chuck a bottle in to 1/2 a tankful every 6 months or so

Around town i generally get about 19mpg and cruising on a motorway about 32mpg. Although funny enough i did read on the forum that the faster you go on the motorway the better fuel consumption is. I at times tow a caravan and then the mpg is shocking :'(

Your figures seems similar to mine, god I wouldn't like to think about it if I was towing too!!

I can't believe Vauxhall had the cheek to stamp ECO TEC on these engines, they are anything but ECO!!! LOL  ;D

There are a few things you can do to make your mpg better like making sure tyre pressures are correct and taking out all the unneccessary things out of the car to make it lighter. I have even taken the spare tyre out of mine as i have new tyres fitted and a puncture now seems less likely due to better rubber used. I do carry a couple of cans of tyre sealant thou. Plan your braking and try to coast to a stop can also prove to be a big benefit as well as saving your brakes.

The problem is, definitions of "around town" differ, as do people's driving styles, so it's hard to say what's reasonable. If your "round town" driving really is urban, with only a few hundred yards between junctions, roundabouts, etc. then it's probably par for the course for a V6 with auto. gearbox.

I find the best economy is anywhere above the torque converter lockup in 4th (about 45 MPH). If you can't cruise that fast it'll cost you 7 or 8MPG IME. Sadly, that's too much to ask on a de-restricted A road sometimes. >:(

Around 60 ISH is the best MPG for mine (36-37). It gets progressively worse over that. About 33 at 70, 31 at 80, 29 at 90, 21 at 120* :o

The estate i drive is probally worse than a saloon due to aerodynamics but a few weeks ago i thought Debs posted her mpg and the figures did differ considerably with speed.

As Kevin said... "around town" is a variable feast .... if you keep moving but contunually accelerate/brake between speed bumps/roundabouts/lights etc you will get worse figures than sitting for long periods in queues !!

A miggy weighs in at 1.7 tonnes(ish) .. the major part of fuel consumption is how quickly and how often you accelerate that mass, as well as to what speed.

I can get around 34mpg at 60 on a motorway run, but usually around 28-30 @ 70 ish, around 25 mpg on the daily commute - 8 miles of twisty B roads, and around 18 when I'm forced to do any "town" driving
