crack in windscreen
« on: 22 May 2008, 16:20:30 »

opps, MOT tomorrow, what a load of hassle, spent last month trying to fix engine, and get home and there is a big crack in the windscreen.

NOT covered by insurance as only third party fire and theft.

just about ready to pick car up and drop it on it's head or mine.

quoted £450, just not worth it now, any offers for parts etc?

might be worth it, see what else happens on MOT.

LOL it's currently doing 7.9 miles to the gallon. (big lump)

That is a very good price, but where is the crack exactly on the windscreen, and how big is it? :-?

I paid 75 notes excess on insurance to have it done by the RAC so that's not a million miles away.

I swear it's noisier now but how the hell do you prove that!

yeah sounds like a good price but he did say that's for a bog standard glass. which is fine by me.

I'm still in two minds whether to get a new cheap car now though

If the crack is outside of the  wiper sweep then it is a pass.  Inside = fail

Tester even failed to spot the crack in mine last year: it was outside of the sweep as well.

That's exactly right and what I was getting to Jonathan :y.  Had many cracks and chips on my old Toyota, but year after year it still passed because they were either outside the drivers zone, or too small to fail on. :y :y

Yet to hear of one positive RAC windscreens experience...

The one on our facelift was nasty,
Mark had some bad experiences...

The new MV6 - had one in the past, and I have the letters from previous owner to RAC complaining of the service and quality of repair....
and the refund payed in compensation  :y

I think I've left it a bit late to complain now, I had it done in the first few days I had the car.  :(

Still it's not bad just sounds a bit windy up front. Weird thing is I cant see anything wrong with the sealing.

Anyway Policychecker, bog standard glass? Do you mean without the sun strip?

All Windscreen fitting companies can give trouble.  I used to be a claims manager, and I kept a book on complaints from my customers about Autoglass - it turned into a novel.  Damaging cars when they replace the glass, dropping the glass on the customers' driveway, not getting the seals right when they fit it....you name it they've done it.

If only there was a place to get the screens and that sealant, I'd fancy a go at it myself
