Hi all, me and the missus are having problems with our 2.0 16v 1998 manual and have hit a dead end. I've posted this a few weeks ago but this is a fuller explanation.

The car has 80k on the clock and has a good history. I've recently changed the crank sensor as that showed up a code and all was well then a week later the cam sensor code came up and the symptoms started. Changed the cam sensor and cleared the code but the problem remains.

Basically, the engine is pinking like mad and under hard acceleration there is a lot of induction noise but a lack of power as if its being restricted. MPG is brutal at 17 mpg round town.

Heres what ive checked.

There are NO codes.

Cat, pipework and boxes all clear

Plugs and leads changed (2 months before the problem started). There was oil in 1 well but this was cleaned out and hasnt returned.

Breathers checked and all clear

Vac pipes and hoses all checked, no leaks etc.

Air box/filter all ok

No EML on

Headgasket ok.

She idles perfectly, no misfires or rattles and will rev freely under light acceleration but if you push the pedal hard from idle theres a HUGE hesitation, a grunt from the airbox, then it picks up. If the engine is running and you open the airbox, instead of a smooth sucking sound its like there a bass box in there.

I've checked just about everything I can think of and am at a loss as to what the problem could be.

I would be really grateful if someone could take the time to give me ideas for what to look at. The fact there are no codes is puzzling but there doesnt seem to be anything mechanically wrong either.

Hope i'm missing something obvious.

I may be on the wrong track here but is the timing belt ok?  if it or the tensioners are on the way out it is possible it could jump a tooth or two. When was it last changed?

cambelt has jumped 1 tooth on 1 cam, hence the noise in the filter box, quite common on the 1.8 and 2.0 ecotec engines in vectra and astra, also our old friend the rover k series, if when checking the cam timing marks are ok its not uncomon to find the crankshaft sprocket keyway worn giving you the vauxhall version of hondas vvc!!!

I would say the cam timing is worth a check too. Failing that an EGR problem or a blocked cat / exhaust perhaps?

Hi Mark, i'm over in Grantham and I know you are in West Bridgeford.

What did you have in mind?

Quick question, would the EGR throw up a code?

1 more thing, some of the vectra guys are mentioning the engine temperature sensor as this produces problems but rarely a code.

Where is this located and where the hell do I get one?

Should it throw up a code or not?

That may be what is wrong with my car.

I remember in the early days of OOF that someone said the valve could just be blanked off. Also that someone had made up some blanking plates. Anyone know if they are still available or easy to make ( I have an old Duckhams oil can and some gun gum!)?

The 2.0 one is vac based so you cna apply a short length of pipe and suck on it......on idle you should notice the idle get worse with it open.

Blank it with a coke can is an easy fix.....sandwich it in betweent eh valve mounting plate and the gasket.

Where is the egr Mark? I dont know what i'm looking for.

I could drive over but havent got a lot of money. What do you charge to look at it? I take it you want to plug the tech2 into it?
