EGR Valve Stuck Open
« on: 05 June 2008, 09:49:09 »

Hi Guys and Gals, Is there any way of blocking the EGR valve on a '98 2.5 V6? It seems to be stuck open?  Help!!

Cheers.

Yes, unbolt it from its bracket (two torx bolts) cut a piece from a coke can and place it between the gasket and the EGR valve and then re-fit it.

You could also try cleaning the exhaust passage in it with some paint stripper

I can confirm a Stella Can works equally well.

Is there a winner in the Steel 'v' Aluminum debate though?

Aluminium is lighter, so has less effect on the power/weight ratio

It should make little difference as the with the tube blocked off, no gases will be flowing near the metal used for blanking so it wont get so hot.

What did you seal the surfaces with after using this blanking plate please?

I have some Pattex Nural 28 ( made by henkel). It is an orange gasket goo suitable for gaskets on gearboxes. It says temperature(-40C to +180C) and oil resistant.

Just re-use the original tin gasket.....sandwich it between the coke can and the mounting base....

I can confirm a similar trick on the 2.5TD engine does tend to blow holes in the can :(
