Tesco Blue Cheese - Check the dates !!
« on: 24 October 2007, 13:36:35 »

From the man that gained £150 from his credit card company for not allowing gambling, and the man who had sky top package paid for by sky for a year due to dpa issues.....Tesco have decided to annoy me.

But this is serious folks and wondered if anyone had experienced similar.

Last night they delivered our home shopping, and whilst i was complaining about an onging complaint to them swmbo alerted me to their own brandded and sealed blue cheese that they had delivered.

16 days past its shelf date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tesco response is we will refund it and er can we have it back, ive threatened them with media, Foods Standards agency and legal action.

A diary product that out of date can ( fact) give listeria, meningitis etc etc .....

So best course of actio folks ? Tesco are taking legal advice on how to handle it and are very very worried about the impact i will have - there calling me back with a solution later today...

I think in the first instance they will offer you a hamper... then if you insist they may even offer some cash vouchers to be used in the store... but they will want the cheese back, officially to check it, but also because they don't want you to have it...

i figured that.....there very calm but determined to get it back....but there insisting they cant make further comment ( offer) untill they have it back, that for me is not suitable. Frankly i dont trust them. They have been advised they have today to resolve, and tomorrow i hand it and invoice over to local food standard agency. There notorious up here due to e-coli break out in same area some years ago.

Still their call back will be intresting  ::)

Ok, maybe I shouldn't be replying to this, so please do not quote me  ::)

I work for a large supplier to Tesco (lets just say fresh food based) and I am responsible for life dating / labelling issues.

It may be interesting to see what (if anything) they do actually offer you by means of compensation for your out of date purchase. A voucher? a hamper? what do you think is best?

Let me tell you this much though, if we send a product to Tesco that is incorrectly dated in any way, they will immediately withdraw the product from the shelf and bill us accordingly. They will bill us for the lost value of the goods withdrawn (even if the staff do getthem free or cheap) This seem fair? i guess it is really, it's their next move that hurts...

They will then fine us (on top of the initial wastage)...this would be in the region of 50K upwards!!!
That fine is just for the fact that we have made a mistake and they have to do something.

So when they offer you a hamper etc and want the cheese back, just ask yourself if this was a supplier mistake and are Tesco now going to make a cool 50K out of??? makes you wonder  :o

Glad you never ate it first though hehe  :y

Strikes me that they can happily deny the whole thing.

You have an invoice, and a lump of out of date cheese, & I presume no proof linking them

They could just turn around and say you bought that a month ago, you are trying it on.

I had a dodgy cooked chicken from morrisons a while back, only got a tenner out of em, few weeks later a food poisoning outbreak at a different morrisons, at that point I thought I should have taken it further.

They constantly stuck to the company line of we have procedures and can prove they were adheared here.  Env health can be provided with evidence to that effect.

Good luck & hope you do better than I did.

They can, but it does not go down well in this country to say that the customer is lying, so they probably wouldn't choose this route (even in cases where they know the customer is lying), unless you happen to make repeated claims etc.

Quite agree, was thinking more along the lines of not giving out much in order to stop that happening (too much)

with regards to the produce being purchased some time ago tesco have confirmed the home shopping is scanned and that particular lump of cheese will "be audit trailed" to last nights shop.

Its also their own brand.

My point to them is that the 3 people i spoke to last night couldnt give a dam and the illnesses that can occur if this was consumed are horrendous. Had they taken the correct pro custoemr approach last night rather than refuse to talk to me and offer me £1,19 for it then the matter would be resolved.

Had a holding call to say there still investigating and they will be calling back.

That sounds positive!

Impressed they can tell one lump of cheese from another, I wonder how widespread this is across their product range

Well if it is not an isolated incident, then they probably know by now that they have a bad batch out there...

to be honest the store that it comes from is possibly the worst in the tesco network, its Cunmbernauld. i m particularly unhappy about my groceries coming from a town once dubbed " britains worst" Therefore hygene, stock levels and cleanliness doesnt surprise me, i would reckon its an isolated case.

However i did think about going to the store to purchase another... :-X

And as for "britains worst town" Thats not my opinion  mind you, remember reading it in a book  ::)
