Sanity check - scuttle drain
« on: 01 July 2008, 20:05:19 »

Unavailable at the weekend to get banned, but able to play miggys anyway I spend a happy Saturday half-doing some jobs.

So I thought I should check that drain.  So having gone about it the long way round (two wipper arms on the floor!); I was, and still am, perplexed.  Where is the Beasty?

I should add it was all quite dry in there other than a tiny bit of damp 'stuff' (removed most) at the very bottom of a rubber bung rearward of a loom heading into the engine bay.  So I'm assuming all is actually well in there.

No photos so a sketch follows.
Whilst I'd expect this to be the same on all, this one is a mini-facelift 2.5 auto with a/conn.  Narrow (white) paper? cabin filter that came out from two clips near the top of the plastic holder/molding.

|------------------------|                    strut top

Mmm, realised I can't really remember the bits here.

Anyway, I expect the bung to have a route out as this looks like it *could* go to the wheel arch behind the strut, but it definately felt really solid.  I couldn't get me hand down there very well so could pull the bug up and out.

So, was I close or need to pay more attention?
- has anyone got a bright photograph of the article.

thats the bung at the bottom, I used a cable fish rod to push all the crap out then flushed it through.  when cleared water will drain down into engine bay and out.  ;)

Was yours also looking dry/okay before you did that.
I do wonder if someone has fitted a solid bung in mine - or is it *that* blocked?
Where in the engine bay is it's outlet?

The outlet is at "x" but it then turns towards the N/S/F wheel on a pre-face lift 2.5 with aircon, on later models it drains forward. So look under the F/N/S wheel arch and you should see a rubber flap, lift it open, all sorts of sh!! should come out. :y :y
Good luck

mine was partially blocked, water in the bottom, even after i cleared it, it does seem solid but thats ok. look down the passenger side engine bay and u will see a run off at the bottom, thats where the fluid runs out.  hope that helps :)

Ah, you spotted my "x".  I couldn't believe the drain would be that high.  So it could stand with 3-4 inches of water without draining lower?? (Would explain the 'overflow' problem into the inside).  That will take a smaller rod than I was using.

So to be clear - poke through the smaller bung/stop at about 'x' (which IIRC is about half way up the bulge) - after finding the flap in the wheel arch and getting wet!

did 2.0 99 f lift a while back.standing by side of car, the "bung" was at bottom of deepest part of the furthest section, the bung is the drain and has a right angle bend and drained facing to the front of the car, water ran forward( to the rad) along a "trenched" chasis member. i could not just poke through down to the floor as chasis member was in the way.

Did not go near the under side or the car for lack of a wet suit. :y

Do you have to remove the wipers to get to this or is there an access hatch on top of the scuttle ?

Access panel is windscreen bottom edge, right corner as you look at the engine bay, peel the thick rubber strip back about 9 inches to make it easier to pop the panel .. it is hinged at the windscreen edge.

Sorry John, the drain IS at the very bottom, anyway you found the outlet under the F/N/S/wing, face lift models ie after '99 drain in the engine bay.

The term 'bung ' is misleading - sounds like a bath plug that would stop it draining!  Its actually more of a grommet.

I used a piece of stiff electrical cable (the single core stuff they use for wiring houses, not flex) bent to shape (courtesy of a guide somewhere :y)

Personally I wouldn't recommend blasting it with a  hose - that is more likely to fill the whole scuttle up if its blocked and then you definitely cant see what you are doing.

I was doing this the challenging (long) way round!
- Yeah, I got that (afterwards) and it was being a bit of a s*d to get back too.

Photos look too dark on my monitor, why I asked if anyone had some bright photos.

Okay, I'm offically confuzzled.  I know the drain should be at the bottom but I don't want to puncture an otherwise good bung.  Everything was quite dry in there so I'll leave it and consult later (and I know the 'secret' way in now anyway).
Are all the cars the same ?

- you know, if the car was out I'd open her up again and take some photos myself!
