Gearbox leaking...
« on: 08 July 2008, 10:58:53 »

Car went up on ramps today to look into suspension problems. Saw some nice reddish liquid dripping off the autobox, yep - looks like gasket has gone on one side.

Can someone provide the part number for a new gasket and let me know what oil needs to go in there please?

Is it best to go for genuine parts - any idea of the cost?

Is this an easy job?

Thanks!

See Jpat website for gaskets, or use liquid gasket
filter can be replaced or cleaned, doesnt get very dirty
If you are in autobahn stormers, see Dave Kembers ad at the back of straight 6 news.

Fluid is Dex3.  recommended is Fuchs Titan 4000 from opie oils

Thanks for the replies...

Will use that oil. I'm not a member of that site - will take a look at the jpat site thanks

Yes you're right, the oil is the same colour as the long life coolant but its def autobox oil, its dripping from the front right hand side of the autobox between the autobox sump and the box. We tweaked it up a touch to allow for gasket shrinkage but its def something that needs sorting

Just spoke to jpat, £5.10 + vat, thats good! How much oil will I need for replacing the sump?

Is there anything else I should change once I've got the sump off?

Thanks guys....

Its normally about 7 litres for a sump drop......front and rear sump that is.

I personally always taste the fluid.....if its antifreeze its sweet, if its ATF you have bad breath for a week  ;D

Taste it? Nutter.....

Cheers mate, is it worth pulling the small sump and replacing the gasket too or just go for the large one? Autobox is sweet, always has been!

Got price on the Vaux Dex3, fair bit cheaper - I take it that its an OK oil?

Vx Dex 3 for 7 litres is cheaper than opie oils?

Its worth dropping the front sump at the same time, that way you get a fluid change into the bargain!

Bummer, I dont wanna put **** in there.

OK, this sounds like the plan. Use front and back gaskets from JPat and Fuchs oil (7ltr)

Sorry about the length of this thread but I have a couple more questions please.

Is there any additional bits I need when the two sumps are off (filters or whatever)?

Are OEM gaskets OK to use or is it best to get genuine?

What oil would I need to replace the oil in the torque converter?

Thanks  :y

A set of taps and dies to remove the threadlock from the bolts (M6 or M8 at a guess) and some threadlock to fit them.

There is an ATF filter that can be changed. The chap on Autobahnstormers includes that with the gaskets.

A new copper gasket for the fill plug might be advisable.

Wouldn't say it's that critical, TBH.

You can't drain the torque converter with the gearbox in the car, so you have to accept that it will retain some fluid. It doesn't have separate oil, it is supplied with ATF by the gearbox.
