HELP - I've got a water leak!
« on: 27 July 2008, 22:02:56 »

Hi All,

I have a major water leak on my 3.0 MV6 and was after a bit of advice / help. I have a couple of pics but can't get them to load into this message. (Tried clicking the insert image button and not working)

The leak is right at the back of the engine, near the top. There is a flat round black plastic part, which looks like a filter, and the leak is either coming from that or from the pipe immediately beneath it.

Any help or advice as to what this is ans on changing the pipes is welcome.

Cheers, Kev

You might find if you turn AC off it stops leaking - may help you get by for a bit but get it sorted very soon as it can quickly dump all your coolant.

This is the thread in maintenance guides http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193594464 for the HBV replacement. If you want to post pictures you need to get them saved to a website like Photobucket http://photobucket.com/ if you haven't got an account it's free and easy to set up. Save them at an appropriate size then copy and paste the direct link url into your posting here. ie you can't post the picture directly here only a link to it somewhere else.

er, 'easy'... well yes and no. It sounds simple enough
Remove scuttle 3 pipes with clips and the vac pipe. Remember
Which pipes go where and which way round the valve
Goes, easy. Then you get in there with a pair of
Pliers/mole grips maybe, and ... Lots of swearing. I lie on the engine with
A rubber mat to make life more comfortable but its a
Bit of a pig to reach, usually pull it up off its post
And you can pull it round to the left to get a better
View, but myn had been done before and the bracket
On the back had broken, so it had been cable tied on. Just
Keep at it,youll get there in the end.

Hi,
I had to change my HBV last week. You will probably find it will be a manageable leak for just a week or so, then will suddenly get much worse. Get it replaced before this stage.

I only removed the plenum to get at mine, the stiff brake vasuum pipe can be swivelled on the grommet that fixes to brake vac unit to get it out of the way.

I had a Sealy VS1663 to remove the spring ear hose clips, makes it dead easy, but you still have to struggle to to get hoses off the old HBV

Don't replace the spring hose clips with Jubilee type clips, can cause fractures in the plastic of the valve.

Dont forget to make up strength of anti freeze. probably a couple of litres required.

Hi - thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

I managed to change the HBV last night, with a pair of standard long nose pliers and my sisters keep fit mat to lie on over the engine. (All hi tech stuff here!)

I think my double jointed wrists and elbows and my ability to swear in 7 different languages eased the situation.

Cheers, Kev.

Yep! Heater bypass valve. Mine had the same problem when I bought it ( the previous owner probably thought it was the head gasket thats why he sold it me so cheap!!). Cost me a tenner from the local scrapyard. Right  cowbag to fit tho!!! Hope this helps. Good luck. Mark

I just changed my heater bypass valve cos it was leaking coolant really badly ( really really badly once the engine was switched off???) and now the leakings stopped...But the heater is only blowing cold... Is there a way to bleed the system?

Cheers

first, you did connectthe pipes the right way around?

To bleed, run to temp with header cap off, heaters on full and 'burp' any hoses to move any air locks, self bleeding apart from that.
