wishbone change - new bolts?
« on: 19 October 2008, 09:55:15 »

Hi all,

I know in the how2 it says to change the bolts but I was in the process of changing the drop links which were far too easy compared to the steering idler yesterday >:( which was a bit of a pig.  So I was looking at these new wishbones I have to put on and thought I could have a go at that today....

...but I dont have the new bolts.... is it that crucial or can I get away with reusing the old ones.  :-/

I used to, as I tend to buy some with wishbones, but its not necessary.

When Marks DTM rebushed my MV6 ones a couple of months back, we reused old bolts.

Nope, as they are angle torqued but not to the point of yield (like head bolts are0....

The difficult part was getting the ball joint thread to stay put as the old nuts came off and the new plastic topped nut went on.  I found a monkey wrench was best with just the right amount of grip so as not to kill the ball joint gaiter.  But it was quite fiddly.....  >:(

WRT to the wishbones.  I completed them last night after a few distractions.  The left (ns) hand drop links came out easy and the wishbone was tough to get out but putting the new one in was a peice of pish.  On the other side the drop links were a bit of a bugger but came out evenually, whereas the drivers side rear bush had somehow gotten trapped at an angle in the bolt hole.  This made extraction difficult but after a bit of gentle pursuasion it came free.

The really difficult part was next. Getting the rear bush aligned properly and the bolt into the hole.  I got the holes lined up as much as possible - this required going right underneath the car, dont do this unless you have lots of axel stands supporting the car at various points.  I then fashionned a dropper out of a wire coat hanger and fed it down through the engine bay as close as I could to the hole.  Using the front bush bolt I then wiggled the bush until the bolt started to drop into the bush and then followed it up using bar extensions and a hammer to tap it home.

Just waiting to get the car geometry setup now after a very rewarding weekend's work  :y

In would have changed the bolts, just because TIS2000 says so. But the local dealer did not have them in stock, so I was about to change the wishbones and re-use the old ones (as the government would say, this is NOT a U-Turn. I have always said clearly that I will either re-use the bolt or not, as the case may be. Clear as mud, that is...). Then I sold the car before having a chance to fit the new wishbones, which I believe are now on Mike Dundee's car... does this help? er..not really I guess...
