2.2 or V6
« on: 27 October 2008, 11:56:46 »

I am needing to replace my rather tired CDX auto with something newer.

2.2 gives better economy but less power, is this lack of power a problem
V6 more power but seems more complicated and harder to fix when broken

more 2.2s out there, mostly cheaper

I can't make up my mind, any thoughts?

Cheers, John

i got a 2.2 manual, and access to a 3.0 auto.

2.2 is loads, LOADS easier to work on. So much space, cam cover gasket is a doddle, really is easy compared to the V6.

The 3.0 is considerbly quicker, but i only find that above 50, through to say 90+

2.2 still sits at 80 all day long, hardly anything has ever gone wrong with mine. In 30k all i have done is.

Cam Sensor
Spark Plugs
Cambelt & Aux belt

Just changed the cam cover gasket as there was slight leakage (tiny amount in the plugs)

Its never broken down, blew a spark plug (was 30k+ old!)

Very reliable engines.

Cheers tunnie.  About what I thought.

Anyone driven a 2.2 and a 2.6 back to back?

I had a 2.0 and a 2.5.

Depending on the load I found the 2L quite lively at slower speeds and cruised fine on mway.   As Tunnie says the engine is a lot simpler/cheaper to work on if that is a factor for you.

While the 2.5 didn't necessarily feel quicker it was a whole lot more refined drive.   But jobs like cam cover seals and cambelt are a notch up in difficulty and obviously the general expense level will be higher taking account of fuel, insurance, rubber, exhausts etc.

I think I would avoid a 2L auto - never had one but suspect that would be underpowered.

i have driven 2.0's the 2.2s are quite a bit better, got more low down grunt, and quite smooth.

Lots of oil changes is key, since i started that (2k oil changes, with breather cleans) with decent BP fuel, it runs so much better.

Mine is silent on idle, silent at speed as well. Genuine exhaust helps, but at 80 with the cruise on can't here a damn thing, still pulls up hills well even full laiden.

If mine died tommorow, i would have to get a 3.0 though!

The v6 will always be more smooth and refined and will be effortless at a given speed compared to a 4 pot.
you pays your money and makes your choice.

There's nothing worse than an auto gearbox if a car is a little lacking in the power department. Mate of mine took his Supra in for repair once and specified he had to have an automatic courtesy car, hoping they'd give him a Lexus.

Imagine his face when he returned with an automatic 1.0 Starlet.  ;D Walking felt quicker. :D

I see myself going for a v6 next time - the 2.2 lacks a bit of power and from what i have read on other posts there isn't much difference in fuel economy.

Arrrggghhhhhhhh, still don't know which to go for.

At this rate it will be the first CDX to come up at the right price that I don't have to drive 60 miles to find out it hasn't been serviced for 26000 miles

Life would be so much easier if I thought I would be happy without a sun roof and cruise  :)

V6 ...  :)  why buy only 2/3 rds of an engine  ?  ...  :)

and the 3.2 version of the V6 is exceedingly nice .....   :)

(I might be a tad biased here ......    :)  )

Good point, except I haven't seen a single facelift auto with the bigger engine, well not this side of scotland anyway  :(

I've had a 2.0 and soon to get rid of a 2.5

The 2.5 isnt exactly fast as it eventually gets to 60 in 10 or so seconds, the 2.0 does it in a painstaking 12 or 13 from what i remember

I'd say avoid the 2.0 and a 2.2 at all costs, and an omega is quite heavy, and 2.0 and 2.2's only being a 4 pot, there just isnt enough get up and go (especially in 1st with an auto box from 0 mph) personally I would get th 2.6 or 3.0 if I was to get another one, i've also experienced a 2.5 (owned) and a 2.6 vectra and even though the bhp is the same, i noticed a massive difference in pulling power throughout the gears with a 2.6 with the torque being more.

I have never driven a 3.0 or 3.2, and I guess you have to remember tax and insurance and fuel economy

Why o why vauxhall didnt give the omega  5 speed + gear box I do not know, I just find with my 2.5 a higher ratio'd 1st gear would have made all the difference

Do vauxhall make 5 and 6 speed auto boxes now ?, i only drove a 2.0 tdi 140bhp 57 a6 the other day, and its got a 7 speed auto, from 0 to 60, i raced it with my omega, wiped the floor with a 4 pot 2.0 diesel :(

Get the 2.6 or 3.0 my freind, you will much appriciate more power throughout the rev range.
