BTW, I applied for this post through an agency.

Today, the agency had to contact the employer, as they'd not heard anything about it. So - employer didn't contact me directly.

If they Don't employ me, then they have to start from scratch, as I am the only one to have further interviews..

Sounds like everyone's mad keen to get you on board but the guy at the top hasn't pulled his finger out and they don't want you to go somewhere else.

Maybe they are just considering what sort of package to offer you?
Point is that you have got this far (ie. to the final point in the process - tests etc after the first interview) and if it did end up at the worst case scenario then you know that you have what it takes for any future interviews.

I guess at the end of the day, he's the IT director, and it's his ar$e on the line if he makes a bad choice. Ultimately, he is putting a 23yr old that he has met once, solely in charge of other staff and a very large infrastructure!

That's different then. Agencies are really pushy as they just want to get their fee and f*ck off. Sometimes they push too hard and put the employer off. Don't worry about it James. As Victor says, que sera sera.

If they want you, you are right for the job. If they don't then move on and keep looking.

not related..I see too many occasions that firms employ their staff relatives which dont know nothing about job..

It's all down to paperwork.  The interviewing Manager has to justify why you are the best for the job and what's another day to him to dot the i's and cross the t's :-/

No you can't let it do that, you have to accept that some you win, some you lose, it's getting that close that should prove to you that you have what it takes.

I know you can't help but think about it constantly tonight but TBH you can't make any judgements until you receive the call tomorrow.

What's really bugging me is this - I am working a nightshift, therefore I have time to think about it all night.

If I wasn't at work, I could just go and get sh1tfaced and I wouldn't have a care till morning !

Absolutely no reason why it should. As you say, you are 23 years old and you have been considered for one of the top jobs in a major construction company looking after it's entire IT infrastructure. You would be responsible for every system the company runs.

I would think that your confidence should be sky high whether you get the job or not. The most important thing to do if you don't get the job is to talk to the IT director and get some feedback as to where he thought you came up short. Take it as a positive outcome and move on.

There's going to be one busy man who's signature decides it. Agencies can chase all they like but they'll be told "he was good but it's not my decision". I wouldn't lose heart over it. Still sounds like you're in there but if it doesn't work out don't dwell on it. To get this far so soon after starting to look shows you've got what it takes
