Exhause manifold Studs

Am hopefully changing my drivers side exhaust manifold on wednesday. Has anyone ever heard of the studs snapping?
Would it be best to heat them up before undoing them?? TIA  :y

Happened to me. Aparently a common fault on 2.0.

Luckily I had a spare head lol ;D

No problem on my V6. The studs did screw out of the head though.

I removed them on my 2.0 no problem. Fitted all new ones though prior to refitting along with new nuts. Dirt cheap from VX £20 the lot.

I beleive MDTM had a few problems doing Ljays V6 exhaust manifold gasket but I can't remember what the problems where

Yep got all new nuts and studs, new manifold gasket and all the other gaskets. Oh and 5l of coolant  :y

Hi Pete, Im sure he will be along at some point to enlighten us.

Any help on this would be great as dreading that part. Have got quite a good how too on changing the manifold from a previous thread  :y

I have a story...................

When i was at Vauxhall i was taking a head off a 2.0 16valve Frontera, snapped an exhaust stud.

Phoned our local (get me out the shit guy who specialised in removal of snapped studs and stuff) and he drilled out and replaced stud.

Anyway when i put the Head back on the vehicle took like 2 liters of coolant and 10 liters of water which i found very strange, only to find he drilled through the Head and it filled the sump with Coolant and Water.

Since then im quite Nervous of Manifolds and stuff  ;D

Where to start!

Drivers side.....strip down fine....
Manifold itself cracked, emergency trip down to see Jue, strip down and remove, drive back, refit all ok.

Passenger side,
Nightmare, strip down tricky, snapped stud, dipstick wouldnt move for access, bastard bolt was major bastard.

i hope he paid for a replacement!!!

mod:
i had one snapped stud when i replaced my exhaust manifold. it was proper seezed in had to get the wd 40 on it. then i found i had a 3 inch crack in the manifold. so had to replace the manifold after all.

Yet to see a snapped stud on the drivers side on a V6....its common on the 4pots though.

The biggest issue with Ljays car was that it appears that somebody had sheared the nut off the stud......so plenty of stud sticking out but, my stud extractor would not shift it due to the gearbox bell housing flange being in the way!

Best to use hexagon socket, (not the more common bi-hexagon type).
Less chance of rounding the nuts then!
