Thanks for the quick replies guys!

The car is going for an MOT tomorrow morning.   I'm then off to see it.

Can someone give me a "not looking through rose tinted glasses" opinion on the Omega.  I love big four door saloons, currently driving a Rover 800.  I get the feeling that the car is better built and the CDX has enough toys to satisfy me?

Wayne
The Omega is a better car than Rover 800.  When I bought mine, it was a toss up between an Omega and a Rover 800 Sterling.  The Omega is better all round - better handling, better engine, better ride, and a CDX is significantly better spec than the Sterling (top of range).  Build quality significantly better as well.

Omega needs 40k/4yr cambelt AND tensioners. Around 100k, play in front wishbone bushes will be past their best (change entire wishbone, cheap from ebay).

Cam cover gasket failure is checked by pulling all plug leads and look for oil in the wells.

Seat heaters are pretty unreliable, esp leather ones.

When checking tyres, look for (common) inside shoulder wear. This needs a full geometry check (and not tracking as seller will try to say).

Welcome to the forum Wayne  :y
I had a rover sterling, fantastic 2.7 engine but thats where the story ends, drive at the wrong end, poor build quality and the list goes on, the Omega is a fantastic car and if it has been looked after you will be a very happy OOF  member  ;D

Well guys, it's a 2.0ltr.  Are they worth having?  I'm stepping down from a 2.7ltr Rover 800 Sterling and so the question is, will the car be good enough for me to swallow the loss of power?

What are the engines like?

Thanks for the info so far guys!

I'd say a 2.0 will be a pretty big step down from the Sterling in terms of performance. Engines seem to be reasonable. Major problems like had gasket failures aren't as unheard-of as they are on the V6 and exhaust manifolds tend to give trouble but other than that they seem OK.

The best balance of performance and fuel economy is reckoned to be the 2.5 / 2.6 v6 though. Go for a manual for the best economy.

Agreed - however, if you do only / mostly motorways, I find the auto is better. Seems to rev about 200rpm lower at 70mph, (gear ratios) - makes a big difference over a tankful!

True. Once over about 45-50 MPH the torque converter is locked up so autobox is not so bad.

I was pootling through a section of motorway roadworks with a silly speed limit the other day and tried running for a mile with the cruise set just under the TC lockup (about 44 mph) and another mile just above the lockup speed. Only about 2 MPH between the two speeds, road practically flat in both cases. Almost 10 MPG difference in fuel consumption 27 MPG versus 36 MPG on the MID :o

Baron, it's facelift registered Nov 99.

I've offered the guy 1500-1600.  The one thing that might be an issue slowly creeping in is he has to top up the water every now and then, cant remember if he said every couple of weeks or so and only a small amount.  Could this be the water pump as the belt was changed at 40k and the current mileage is now 90k and hasn't been done.

It drove very nicely, no knocks from anywhere, braked hard in a straight line, pulled ok for a 2.0ltr  Maybe the 2.0ltr is a possibility?

There are a few niggling things that need doing.  The glovebox handle has been broken off, the stereo has a dodgy volume/fader control that brings the rear speakers in to life when the knob is fiddled with.

when the belt job is to be done every 40 as mentioned, the water pump is to be done at the 80k cambelt job

If you buy it, that car needs a cambelt kit and water pump change before you start using it.

Ahh...makes sense!

I told him it'll cost £200 to do the cambelt.  He's got the figure of 2300 from Parkers in his head.  When I offered him 1500-1600, he umm'd and arr'd, said he'd speak to the missus and said probably not.  We shall see.

Oh, he said the Manifold was recently done.  Something about the 2.0ltr being prone to leaking or something?  I take it he meant the exhaust and not inlet!

What are we talking for parts for the cambelt and water pump? and how long a job?  I've done the belt and pump on me Rover 827 so would do myself.

That's £1000 more than I paid for my CDX which is a year newer, and mine needed nothing doing.

If he won't budge - keep shopping  8-)

The manifold on the 4 pots tend to crack.
