Best place to get windscreen fitted
« on: 06 February 2009, 12:56:26 »

hi all,

where is the best place to get a new windscreen fitted for my Omega and what's the likely cost? Having trouble getting quotes as everyone wants it done via my insurance it seems.

Alternatively, if I upgrade to Fully Comp (didn't bother at the time as car is worth buttons) how long before I can make a claim?

Any experience of either would be appreciated.

Ive used insurance to do it couple of times, cost £70ish

will be 2-300 if paying yourself I think

I've used autoglass / auto windscreens and been happy.

heard nowt but bad about RAC replacements.

Last time I checked insurance, it was cheaper to get fully comp than tpft  :-/

Think most of us fully Comp therefore approx £60 to get it replaced at the Insurance companies choice who ever they designate, dunno about upgrading to FC then claiming would give it a few weeks b4 claiming windscreen fubar! :y

Try some of the smaller local companies as they'll normally do you a better deal :y :y

anywhere but RAC windscreens......

Why not cut one out of a scrap and have a go yourself?  given the half wits that certain companies have, you can't do a worse job.  just buy the adhesive

The only experience I've had with RAC windscreen was them on the phone saying they didn't have the glasss and then a bloke on the door-step an hour later saying he'd come to fit the glass?!!

I think a simple case of the arse not knowing what the elbow's doing there....

Anywhere but National Windscreens, 1st attempt was done by a bunch of ar**holes in Edinburgh who used stanley knifes to cut the old one out, cutting into the inside roof card and cutting into the inside side trim. "It was already like that" was the response when I complained. Screen was not fitted correctly and was sticking out 1 cm on one side around the weather seal. Never ever have I met such a complete bunch of tossers. 2nd attempt was done in their glasgow branch and at least the guys used the correct tools to get the new windscreen out to reseal.

Cost me my £75 excess and was quoted £350 for the screen minus the seals not using insurance. Think you would be best to get it from your insurance company, I had to replace my one when water and white fungus started in the corner of the screen, eventually cracked the screen

Just been quoted £366! opps that! Will upgarde insurance at the weekend. Crack has split into 2 and is about 10" in 2 directions now, from the base of the screen......dunno how long it's gonna last. Suppose it a good thing that it has 11 months Mot left.

What about buying a second hand one and paying someone to fit it? Any idea of labour costs? I was quoted £277 for the screen plus £40+ for the seals.

Little while back, when I was saving an old Cav from the scrappie I took a "previously loved" screen round to the local Autoglass workshops, asked nicely and one of the guys did it for me in his lunch break for the price of a few beers.

Upgrade your insurance,pay £60/70 excess,job done.....

Surely thats the easiest option???

As regards claiming straight away....what can they do???

They might know you have upgraded to get it fixed but they cant do anything about it......

At the end of the day a stone isnt going to be too fussed when it bounces up and cracks your screen is it?

These things can happen at anytime and the insurance know that

True enough. I'll upgrade at the weekend and then claim when it actually goes (which could be anytime I suppose)
