I, amonst others, received the following email today:

NO FUEL DAY - Monday 19TH November 2007

The UK government's further tax increase on fuel has taken the average price of unleaded to the £1 a litre barrier!

DON'T PAY TAX - DON'T BUY FUEL

Monday November 19th has been formally declared "NO FUEL DAY" and the people of this nation should not buy a single drop of fuel that day. This really does work. Because of the HUGE revenues generated by fuel, the tax is paid DAILY. Just one day of action will seriously hit Government cash flow! You can make a difference. If the government don't get the message after one day, we will do it again... and again! Without taking action the price per litre will continue to rise.

Remember, not only is the price of fuel going up but at the same time airlines are forced to raise their prices, road haulage companies are forced to raise their prices which effects prices on everything that is shipped. Things like food, clothing, building materials, medical supplies etc. Who pays in the end? WE DO.

You can do something! If you send this message to just 10 people, and they forward it to 10 people. and so on, by the time it has reached the 6th generation, then this message will have been seen by 20 MILLION people! So, send it to everyone you know...

Make The Commitment, on Monday 19th November: DON'T BUY FUEL - DON'T PAY TAX

Media, Press and Television are respectfully requested to publicise this to the fullest.

Will this not just result in double-bubble the next day?

Well, that's just what I thought. It's a good sentiment but won't hurt the government one bit. We don't pay our taxes daily.

I'm all in favour of some direct action but it does need to be hard hitting and effective.

What a load of rubbish that is .. !!!!

Fuel tax is paid to the revenue by the fuel producers/distributors, they then claw it back from consumers. The amount paid to the revenue is on production not sales....

So if you don't buy fuel on monday it makes no difference to the revenue at all.. they will still get the money from BP/shell/texaco etc etc ... all that will happen is the producers/distributers tanks will stay a tad fuller for a tad longer... then you will buy on tuesday and friday instaed of monday and friday .. you spend the same amount, they produce the same amount, the revenue get the same amount ....

It's not rocket science .. but some folks like to try and make it look that way !!

At the end of the day we all need fuel, the government know that, thats why the motorist is such a soft target. I think that at times of high oil prices the government should reduce tax accordingly to offset higher fuel prices, after all when you consider the inflationary effects high fuel prices must have on the economy and inflation. But hey what do I know I'm only an ordinary person gifted with common sense a commodity rarely found in a politician

Fuel boycots never work. Ultimately, you will fill up the day before, or day after.  That twaddle about tax being paid daily to treasury. Cobblers. They probably wouldn't have the systems in place to do that anyway, and besides, the treasury has sufficient funds to cover.

It might make people feel better but that's as far as it goes. BP would be out of business if everyone thought as I do because I generally only fill up at the cheapest "big name" fuel stations which around here is normally Shell. Most of their custom probably comes from fleet drivers who couldn't give a monkeys.

No skin off their nose if you don't fill up one day then come back the next day with an Omega on vapours and chuck 75 quid's worth in.
