Any ideas what size drillbit to use, if I want to thread out to this size?

I have a tap set if you want to borrow - but quite low quality (ebay special)

5mm for an M6.

The general rule of thumb is the drill needs to be approx 0.83 (⁵/₆ths) x tap size.

I.e.

M3 = 2.5
M4 = 3.3
M5 = 4.2
M6 = 5.0
M8 = 6.8
M10 = 8.5
M12 = 10.2

Cheers Mark, I will go out and get a 5mm drillbit and the M6 tap later, for my LPG injectors

The drill bit size is determined by the thread pitch. Subtract one from the other to give the size (then round it to 1 decimal place).

eg...
M6x1 = 6-1 which is 5mm

M8x1.25 = 8-1.25 which is 6.75mm nearest drill bit being 6.8mm
