check coolant still on ?
« on: 17 March 2009, 18:15:52 »

The Check Coolant message came on recently, I topped up the water by about a pint or so, but the message still comes on ?. The engine temp seems about 4deg hotter than normal, about 90deg.  Where is the water sensor it uses ?.

Sensor is part of the coolant bottle which means the whole bottle has to be replaced if the sensor is caput :(

Right up your street this one Ken

The bottle has a float inside that can get a bit gunked up....easily cleaned.

If this is ok, on the bottom is a connector, warm the area around this up (boiling water works well) and you can pull the full assembly out.

The sensor is nothing more than a read switch and I have seen a few with dry joints.

I've got two here that mis-report coolant level.  Both read fine on a continuity tester when off the car.  I guess the (reed?) switch gets lazy when in the same position for months.

I would strongly recommend removing the connector (underneath coolant header) and shorting with a bit of wire.  Then remember to check coolant the old-fashioned way.

New tank assy about 30GBP if I recall.  Don't waste time on a S/H unit.
