FIRST QUESTION:- LEAK FROM CAM COVER

Did cam covers about 200 miles ago. Now notice got very slight oil leak from rear of bank 1 or 2 (Where the half moon is).
Don't think I put enough of a blob of sealant there.
Correct torque applied.
Can I get away with resetting the gasket with more sealant, or do I have to replace the gasket.

just re seal it, unless the seal is damaged. Did you use genuine vx gaskits and o rings? Black goo used to be loctite 598 or what ever the superceded number is now.

Thanks Chris.

Got gaskets from mechanic mate. Had them in his garage. They weren't in vx livery - so no.

But will give it a go, 'cos I only put a smear of sealant over the half moon and none on the seat.

i would replace the gaskets with genuine, pattern ones don't last long!

never used non genuine personally, but they say youll be doing the job again in a couple of months time.

If your taking it apart again, i would consider fitting genuine for the sake of the ignition system and waisted time and effort.

Anyone know the correct seal stuff/black goo that replaces 598 or whatever?

Its not 598!

I have tried pattern gaskets including Elring from auto vaux and FAI ones....both were shite lasting at max 6 months.

And as I have already carried out said experiment, hopefuly it wil save others from doing the same!  :y

Its not 598!

i am under the impression 598 ,as said, is no longer available and 5910 is the superceeded equivelent, it was the 5910 number i could not remember. if 598 is not to be used, maybe you could have informed me in the thread below!

I got fed up and replaced covers with Vectra V6 ones. When doing my Vectra V6 I have reused old gaskets and after 6 months, no leaks! Covers have to swapped (left to right) so oil has to poured in far left corner.

yeah get gen ones and make sure you get enought things out of the way, don't be tempted to just stuff the covers through a tight gap and hope for ht best. they will be dislodged and endup leaking from not being seated properly
