Can't drop diff
« on: 31 March 2009, 15:45:34 »

Hi all

Just replacing my rear springs. I've been following the how to and everything is fine - except that having undone all the bolts the diff will not drop. I've bounched the wheels (gently) but no joy.

And yes, the four bolts into the subframe are out, as well as the roll bar to semi trailing arm bolts.

Any ideas?

This might sound daft - but I did it......

Where are your axle stands located?  anywhere on the rear subframe by any chance??

Ah... oh dear.  :-[ Do you think it's safe to jack the car up under the diff so I can move them?

I take it that it's much easier to change the springs if you drop the rear subframe then?

Lol, slot the jack in from behind so you jack the trailing arm and pop the stands under the rear subframe bush plate where you normaly jack

Lol, I will just quote the following from the mainenance guide

Quote
do not place these under the trailing arms as these need to be able to move for this job.

Cheers! All done  ;D. I did see that bit, but silly me thought it was just the trailing arm that the wheels hang off!! Wasn't till I looked closer I spotted the schoolboy error!

Watch out when you tighten the mounts, it's very easy to pinch the fuel pump wiring, done that, blows a fuse and generates more work.
