Staggered by a Vauxhall Dealer...
« on: 15 April 2009, 14:22:41 »

I'm almost lost for words..

I went into the local Vauxhall 'stealer' asking for some manual gearbox oil and some diff oil for my 2.2 51 plate diesel mig....

"Oooh" came the reply, with a sucking of the teeth. "That's normally done through the workshop, I've not sold gearbox oil to a customer in 5 years"

'Oh', says I. 'here's my reg number can you tell me the part number for the stuff I need as I don't want to mix the wrong types together...'

"sorry, son" came the reply "our system doesn't tell us that. What gearbox do you have?"

'Eh?' says I, 'can't you tell from the , reg, chassis number etc.'

"Erm, no" came the reply.

'It's a 5 speed manual one as it's a 2.2 diesel' Says I.

"They do different ones you know"

'Hmm', was all I could say.

Is it me? Or should this be a really simple question to answer?...

So after 10 mintes, my old Haynes manual and the handbook for god's sake

This is what he came up with

Part: 93165388 Diff Oil at a staggering £40+ per litre!
Part: 93165290 gearbox oil at ~£4 per litre

Are these even remotely close to what I need?

So some specific questions:

Do I need the specific manual gearbox oil recommended by Vauxhall to change the oil?
If so what is it?
How much do the box take? 1L?

Do I need to flush it (by draining, filling to the fill hole with the new oil. driving, draining and then filling to the fill level (9mm below the fill hole)) as described in Haynes; or can I just drain and fill?

What diff oil do I need?
Is it really £40 a litre for the Vx stuff?

Finally, track rod adjuster 'tubes'. Are they available on their own or will I need the two ball joints and the tube thing in the middle as one item? Mine's seized on both sides and I need the tracking sorting.  :-/

Cheers

Go to www.opieoils.co.uk and register against OOF (for discount :y)

Do a search aginst your car and they will come back with the recommended oil types.

For the gearbox oil, go for the best they have got!

Ow yes, gearbox holds about 1.2 litres and you shoudl not need to flush it (yours would have the later synthetic stuff in anyway), diff is a simalar amount

I am afraid Spike you have got there one of the many crap Vx dealers around who do not know really what they are doing, especially if the car is an ex production model like the Omega!

They just do not want to know!!

Find yourself a 'good' Vx dealer (yes they do exist!) who really does want to assist you.

I fortunately have one of those who is still keen to deal with the Omega, and is usually very reliable, trustworthy, and gives me full discounts! 8-) 8-) :y.  However, even them I have to watch carefully to ensure they do not sell me the wrong product!! ::) ::)

PS Are you in the South-East?? :-?

The ulitmate gearbox oil appears to be

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-832-silkolene-pro-srg-75-full-ester-synthetic-ester-racing-gear-oil.aspx

And for the diff I use BOA90LS, this is officialy for LSD's but the friction modifier appears to help prevent leaks

The Caffyns Vauxhall Dealership on Orbital Park, Ashford Weds. 8-) 8-)

In particular I have found Matthew Pullen of the parts dept., extremely helpful, even to the extent of giving me full discount when I first went there without my ABS TC! :y

Don't know anything about the servicing dept though as I have not used them................and at £75 per hour labour I am in no hurry to do so unless I'm ill!! ::) ::) ;)

Damn nice comfortable car that was, probably the fond memories of that car that prompted me to get an omega in the first place.
