I put the crankcase breather pipe (the one that comes down from the rocker cover at the back/right) back on with a new gasket, but it still leaked.  Now I did it over with the vauxhall black sealant (and no gasket). What should I do now - let it sit? For how long? Or heat it up? Or just drive it?

not familiar with the 4 pot personally. Maybe someone will know.

 What black goo is it? Does it have a number, drying times can vary depending...?

If its the same sealent as the cam covers than an hour or 2 will be more than enough as the actual thickness will be very small

It's the vauxhall sump sealant, part no. 90485251, as rec. on this forum.
On the tube there's a clock at 5 minutes to 12, which I thought might be Vauxhall's opaque way of saying 5 minutes curing time. I'll be leaving it overnight, so I'll post the results tomorrow.

Well, I've driven about 60 miles with it and it looks dry - before it would be pooling, dripping and generally coating the underside with a film of oil. So if it holds, I can recommend the black goo (90485251) as a substitute for a new gasket, which did no good.

I'd also recommend an orangutan to do this job, or someone with similarly long, bendy arms - really hard to get your hands on this, and you need to work blind most of the time.

Well we've a 4 pot and a v6 and I've done loads of work on both and I have to say that the biggest blind spots I've come across are on the 4 pot between that pipe and the exhaust manifold.

Still, the v6 looks alot more scary to work on

All I know is compared to all the four pots I have worked on, including Carlton's, let alone straight six's like Senator's, my V6 has already proved very awkward in many ways.

Just getting to the plugs is bad enough, let alone that blessed HBV and the passenger bank cam cover casket.....oh and even the oil filter being only accessible from underneath the car!

My poor fingers and knuckles, it has cost a fortune in creams!

Yes gone are the days when all you had to do was open the bonnet and plugs, distributor, carburetor, oil filter, even rockers, etc, was all there for the taking!!

I would like to rip out the air conditioning altogether - lots of room in there with that out - but I'm told that is never going to work. True or not?

I wouldn't - AFAIC Aircon is essential

If you use a 2.0 Aux belt you can then bypass driving the Compressor.

If you haven't re-fitted the gasket that will be part of the reason. Fit a new gasket with sealant ob both side and make sure both faces are clean.
