Crak seal leak
« on: 15 June 2009, 22:48:57 »

Hi guys and gals,

I think i have a front crank oil leak, oil is splashed around the lower crank pulley and has splashed oil around local components.  I'm 99.9999% sure it's not the cam seals as i have just removed these and they are as dry as they day i installed them 3 years ago.  There is a lot of oil at the base of the timing belt cover, over the flat oil pan and plastic cover at the base of the trumpets.

I have ordered a crank seal and crank bolt but now need a locking kit so i can complete the job.

Does anyone have a kit i may borrow for a few days please?  i have PM my local Omega scientist Dr MarkDTM but i have not heard owt, so i guess he's busy.

Regards

That's not the first time i've heard that, some guys in Turkey mentioned it a while ago.  I thought is was his computer as nobody else complained.  I run at 1280x800 so i don't see the problem.

Avatar now changed for a smaller one.

Are you sure it's not the oil pressure sender? I had the front of engine covered in oily dirt and was afraid of crank seal damage but changing the sender has made the job.

Now there's a thought, but i have no idea where this is... i have google'd it but can only see x20LET engine oil sender and not the V6.

Also, there is not oil in the V, only dirty oil at the lower part of the engine, not much higher than the crank pulley.

Oil pressure sender is just next to crank pulley, on left lower corner of engine when looking from front. AFAIK all Omegas have the same sender...

Thanks KCL,

Having thought about it (its at my dads in bits at the mo) i recon the oil sender is ok, the oil is coming from the crank seal.

I will have a much closer look this weekend as i ran out of time last week and didn't really take a close enough look.  BBQ'd food was just being served as i took the timing belt cover off  :y

I am still in desperate need for a locking kit if anyone could assit please? pretty please with cherries on top  :-*

Thanks Marky Mark.

I am at work in Notts tomorrow, any chance of collecting tomorrow afternoon? Failing that i can come up at yor convienience.

I'm sure i can get my dad to knock up some kit to do the crank bolt.

Out of interest - how often do these seals fail?  I recall you needed the locking kit back last time as you had a crank seal job waiting on your drive...

Would crank seal leak be very obvious once belt removed?

Cheers

I made a restraining tool from a piece of flat mild steel bar, bent/angled it so it bolted to the pully using 2 of the bolts and onto the alternater mounting point. Worked a treat :y

Hi chaps,

Have been to visit Mark and Pete in Nottm today - Thanks for setting me up with the kit for this guys, i can't tell you how i underestimated this job.  I never would have thought about the spacer or metal locking plate!  I cant thank you enough, without this kit the job would be very nearly impossible! :y

As soon as i got home i started the crank seal job.  I had already removed most of the parts needed to do this job, so i was already 99% ready.  I have attached a pic of the oily mess i was faced with before i started!

So after removing the timing belt and crank sprocket, i started 'operation cleanup'.  I used some stuff called GUNK and brushed this all over the lower part of block, once washed off the block was looking like new!

I then removed the oil seal by punching a small hole in the seal and using a self-tapper pull it out.  I noticed that the metal spacer was scored around one end, i guess this is what may have caused the leak in the first place? I trust I can just turn this around once cleaned up with some emery cloth.

Now i wasn't entirely sure that the crank seal was the cause of the leak.  It did have traces of oil on the surface of the seal, but nothing major.  Saying that the alloy metal plate below was covered with gunky oil, even the small hole was slightly obstructed!  Oil was all over the sump, from one side of the block to the other.  I also took a look at the cam seals through the cam sprockets and i couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, looked lubricated but not wet or leaking.

At this point I downed tools as I was unsure on how to refit the seal.  Do I need to lubricate both sides of the seal?  My dad tells me that the block side of the seal may need a lick of sealant, which his Volvo manual recommends for his car.  I have the pressing in tool on loan from Mark, so do I need to smash it in place or push it in lightly?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards
Marc

PS: Like my handy crank lock support? Who said this was a two man job?  ::)
