Anyone taken the 'Megamos' type apart - it seems to be encased in that compound used to waterproof (and IP protect) the circuit.

1st take 1 sammy.
2nd, lift sammy over your head, and bring down on sounder (best to have removed from car at this point)

3rd, innards of sounder should now be clearly visible.

And yes, that is a cap and what looks like a regulator or transistor/fet poking their heads through the compound

I've had two types apart but neither had the insides potted. Not a bad idea given the environment they're in. :-/

Are those the batteries you can see just under the surface? Just wondering if it's possible to dig them out and connect a replacement to the exposed tags?

Otherwise, a play with sammy followed by bin.  :(

Yup, they are the batteries.

I reckon my problem may be water ingress (the potting compound is cracking quite badly in places) rather than batteries themselves.

Potting compound is a complete ^!)(*&"^ pain in the backside.

I makes things retain heat, PCB's more subject to cracking, and is imposible to remove without destroying everything in its path.

Mutter, mutter, mutter ...
