I have changed all the pads and got the handbrake working thanks to Marks DTM guide I have got one drum off but the nearside refuses to budge. Beyond the recommended hitting the DRUM with an hammer what else might shift it! As the car is an auto the shoes on the offside are okay (thank goodness £77 from dealers) I didn't dismantle the shoe assembly as it all looked ok. Adjusting the shoes using the star washer is a laugh especially when you forget which way it should go Still can't shift that nearside drum tho'

Use a rubber mallet, which will loosen it!

have you backed off the handbrake cable, if you have then you might have the same problem as i had, the shoes had come undone from the back plate, it was a case of pulling,pushing,swearing & timely slaps from a nylon mallet, when i did finally get it off i found the drum side was u/s due to bits rattling around in there for too long, but i hope you are luckier than i was

Brute force and ignorance 

the star can go either way, so no correct way to remember    very helpful!

Quite often need to adjust the shoes so they are as far from the drum as you can get them. Depending how long they have been on they can wear a groove into the drum which the shoes will catch on and stop you removing it.

Yup, sounds like you need to back off the shoes some more. I was unlucky because I had a post snapped, took hours to get the drum off.

Are you doing the uprated mod on the handbrakes, too? That's what the 'bits creating a groove' things about.

They fall apart, but Vauxhall changed the design in '99 (or thereabouts) after using the same rubbish shoe design for thirty years 

Rotating, hitting, levering etc will eventually work. Have faith! And strength, that helps too.
