ABS / ECU
« on: 01 July 2009, 08:51:23 »

Guys,

I am having to get my abc ecu unit replaced tommorow, car failed the mot on it. Thought I would get away with it as it is an intermitent fault but the bugger came on on the test. I posted this subject a few months ago and got some helpful replies. I am not going to atempt doing it myself, not going to Vx either at 800 odd quid for the repair so will be letting the garage that mot'd it do it as they are doing a leaky shock (failed on the shock and abs/tc light).

The garage only noticed the abs light, I failed to tell them about the heavy stearing,tc light and speedo not working! The garage said that it must be a sensor out, now I know a lot more about it than them (tiny country garage you see  :-?) When I go back for the work to be done for the re test I will fess up to the fact that it is the abs ecu unit that has gone and how much will they charge to fix it.

My question after all of this rambling is: does anyone know the link for the company that refurbs the units (someone posted it on the site but cannot find it anywhere). what I plan to do is get a quote from the garage for the whole job but they will be quoting for a new unit plus labour, or what I want to do to keep the price down is for them to quote on removal and fit and I will send the unit off to this company that I cant find the link too. I think the refurb company charge about 125 quid ish to refurb the unit in about 2 days with a 2 yr guarantee? What labour charge would you think would be reasonable to remove and fit the refurbed unit?

Any help would be great  :y

Hi

The company you are talking about is BBA Reman. Might be a 2 day turn around but then factor in transport. I think it was Entwood who used them.

As to labour, my wild guess would be three hours for a garage so £150 unless it was a main dealer.

Thanks for that Varche, I would have thought about the same time in labour as you did but I have heard that it is a pig to do and did not want to be ripped off by the garage. I think I will be getting them to check the o/s/r sensor first though before thinking about changing the ecu unit as it may well be that (I am hoping very much that it is the sensor!!!) Not too sure if the garage will be happy anyway to remove, wait a few days for me to send off the unit to be refurbed and then refit and re mot it!

Thanks for that mate, I will post on this thread or send you a pm to let you know if it is indeed the unit that needs replacing after the results from the garage, am I assuming that there is only one ecu unit for that model and yr?

The ECU has configuration data stored on it and there are also several variants with different electrical connections, IIRC. If going the second hand route be sure that the part number is the same and the car configuration is also correct (engine size, auto / manual, etc) otherwise you'll need to Tech 2 it to correct the config.

Of course, if you have your own unit refurbed, it will come back configured exactly as it was before.

I would say about 2 hours labour in total to remove and refit once returned.

The car will drive without the ECU fitted, by the way. No speedo, TC or ABS obviously. Worth covering the ABS valve body mating face with something to avoid contamination if you do this.

If your car only failed on the light being out...remove the bulbs...get your car through its MOT then worry about TC unit...

I managed the job in 2 hours 1st time...I do it a bit differently now and it takes an hour max...

An MOT station should fail a car with ABS fitted where the warning light fails to go through the correct cycle at startup. Removing the bulb may work, depending on how thorough they are, of course, but count yourself lucky if it does!

If your car has just failed on ABS, and your getting a free retest, I doubt the bulb trick will work.

Maybe done before hand you may get away with it  :-/

Yep. If it's the same tester I think he'd be very foolish to pass it, just in case you've been sent from VOSA to check up on him.

Omega6pot,

Just an update, on the dreaded abs ecu, garage had it in today and they conclude that it is the unit that has gone. I have 2 choices: either get mine refurbed by BBA - Reman or think about your one! my part number is the following - Bosch  972538  0  273004 206 is your one exactly the same? Garage stressed that it has to be identicle .

Cheers fella
