the swirl pool is kepted in,the tank by 4 clips which are a right t$&t ,get some gloves on and feel for them carnt  remember if u push down on them or lift them over the lip .I found once i got 2 or 3 unclipped went for the 3 and 4 and the first 2 kept locking back into place.
P.S once i got it out ,I thought well might aswell of left it in.(unless you want to blow the pipe through)

OK got it out thanks.I used 2 pence coins to help prise the tabs out (hard to get with just fingers and edges are a bit sharp!)Then put the coins between where the tabs lock in so they couldn't go back in place while i got the other ones. With 3 off i just twisted the pot round a bit and last one came away too.(remembered to pick out the coins once pot removed!)
Here's a picture of the gunk in the bottom of the pot

And here's a picture of the 4 tabs on the bottom of the pot that hold it in(for anyone that might need to know what they're looking/feeling for when it's in the tank.

I thought mine was dirty! That is unreal - will go much better with all that cr*p out of there.  :y

EDIT: It might be worth asking Jimbob nicely if he can graft those pictures into the Maintenence Guide (which will be updated soon as I am having to replace my pump tomorrow night  :-[)

Forgot to mention ...........
Now you've gone this far, I'd now completely empty the remaining fuel in the tank, and really clean it out. Then, fit a brand new fuel filter filled with Diesel Magic, as well as putting a few gallons of fresh non-supermarket diesel into the tank.

Ok i've posted the pictures in test zone.
I had put a new fuel filter on with diesel magic as advised about 2-3 weeks ago but hardly been using the car because of the stalling problem.(spent more time trying to fix it and been driving a borrowed car)
i could take it off and see if its full of crap now.(like old one was)
How do i drain the tank?
Also the pump motor has packed in.Tried putting power to it and nothing.Gave it a clean with carb cleaner and got more gunk out of it too.Still didn't turn so i just had to open it up and take a look. The carbon brushes in the motor are worn away to nothing and even the commutator(had to look up that word) is worn/damaged because the springs that push down the brushes have been touching it.
I dont know when the pump stopped working but i really hope this has been the cause of my stalling problem.
Anybody know approx.how much the pump motor will be.
Here's a picture of whats needed.

If any use, on it reads..
VDO
Made in Germany
GM
90 466 019
50/94
09/1

That's the jobbie!
I priced one at the stealers a while ago - from memory it was just over a hundred quid, and 'to order only'. '90 466 019' looks like the Vx part number, so try an enquiry on this. You could also try doing an on-line search.
You can't actually drain the tank, other than by removing it. I totally emptied mine of fuel, then used some old shirts to wipe the tank base completely clean of crud. It's a bit of a fiddle doing it this way, but with patience you'll succeed.
Mine's been fine since!

Hi Spikerz,

I had the same problem with my TD about 2 years ago when the car would struggle to start when the fuel was low, so to combat this I always kept the tank half full until I got around to pulling the pump out. I managed to clean mine and get it running again - until last week....

Down to about 10l of fuel and the car cut out on me! Started and ran, then cut out again - kept doing this at random intervals. Put some fuel in and all was well again. Pulled the pump out last week and it was dead. Andy at Vx quoted about £95+ for the pump, the part number on the pump is old so he will have to look it up manually for you.

I managed to get one of ebay this weekend for £25  :y

Quoted £119 from vauxhall.Cant afford that.I'll be searching elsewhere.
Bailed fuel out tank with a cut plastic bottle and cleaned it out with an old towel.spotless now.

Unfortunately, that price sounds about right.
So long as there's no bits of fluff from the towel left in the tank, then it should be a good 'un.
