Hello all - I'm thinking of purchasing a year 2000 Elite estate 2.5 V6 but have been told the ABS and TC lights are on but car is driving fine, apart from a very noisy wheel bearing - has anyone any ideas as to what could be wrong? Guy at end of phone say he thinks the wheel bearing is causing the ABS & TC light to be on. :-/

does the speedo work?  if so then it rules out ecu failure.

could jsut be a dodgy sensor

Which wheel bearing is noisy?  I think the ABS takes the reading for the speedo etc from the NSF wheel, so if it's one of the others then it could be causing an ABS warning without affecting the speedo.

Incidentally, the ABS feeds the vehicle's speed to the speedo, cruise control, range and consumption display, power steering, and for some bizarre reason the sunroof.

Dodgy sensor or abs ecu breaked (when ours packed up initially just abs/tc lights on, then speedo went some of the time, then completely and then power steering got heavy)

Sorry have not drove or seen the car yet just looking info to help with my decision before tomorrows viewing  - knowledge is a powerful thing, good for negotiating discount - LOL.
Is it a big job to replace the bearing and is there any how to's on this.
Also does anyone have any pics of abs sensor and location - just to see if they need cleaning.

I understand that the spacing between the ABS sensor and the toothed ring which rotates with the wheel is critical - if the wheel bearing is worn badly enough that the wheel is out of alignment then that could be enough to stop the sensor getting a reading from the ring.

Sorry, don't know, I've never done one. Unless Vauxhall designed the hub assemblies in a particularly bizarre way I wouldn't think it would be too horrendous though.

Is it a front wheel bearing or rear?

Fronts are reckoned to be not too bad a job. Rears need to be pressed out. Reports from those who have trod this path vary from "hard work" to "nightmare", as far as I can see. :-/

I have to say, I think a wheel bearing would have to be very sloppy indeed before the ABS sensor would be affected. Also be aware that the rear ABS sensors are mounted on the side of the diff, so wheel bearings make no odds at all at the back.

As above, could very easily be the ABS/TC ECU....been down this road myself quite recently :(
First the ABS and TC lights come on occasionally > then permanently > then the speedo dies (and mileometer  :y ) > then the steering gets heavy (speed-sensitive) > cruise control ceases to work > even the satnav dies too :(
You can get the ECU remanufactured/refurbished for circa. £125, fitting turned out to be too tough for my (admittedly rubbish !) skills.....about an hour perhaps ?
