Common MOT failure points
« on: 12 October 2009, 10:12:09 »

Hi all,

Want to book an MOT for this week but wondered what the common failure points are?

I have replaced the following within the past month or so...

4 x tyres
front wishbones
front drop links
4 x dampers
disks and pads
rebuilt the front calipers

The main thing I am worried about is that in order to get the power steering pump to work the engine needs to be revved above tickover. Will this matter?

Cheers,
Mark

In the past I have had,
Front wishbones, drop links steering idler arm, rear subframe bushes.
Then you obviously have tyres, exhausts, wiper blades, windscreen washers, horn, handbrake, brake pipes.
There are more i am sure but thats about the main ones i can think of

Rear coil springs have a tendency to snap after a certain amount of time.
Exhaust corrosion between mid section and backbox is also common.
Headlamp lense clips and leveling mechanisms can break sometimes too.
How old is your car exactly?  :-?
Most of this stuff is age related.

Thanks for the replies, my car is on an S plate.

Is there any way you can check for rear wishbone bush play?

Had this one before! Pain on Elite, luckily tyre was advisory. I say luckily as it has the sports extras so the bloody huge tyres on it! lol Turns out it had only scrubbed slightly and they picked up on it.

Most of the time, its the little things to look out for! Recently put a daihatsu YRV through a test, passed with advisory on a bolt missing from passenger seat frame, didnt even think about it as been moving things around so taking seats out to get bits in!

Unfortunately it failed :(

List of things were;

drivers side tie rod (excess play)
drivers side headlamp aiming too high
hole in the exhaust

How do I adjust the driver side headlamp (they are xenons) The self leveller arm is on the other side?

Cheers,
Mark
