sorry didnt make it clear got new coil pack in now so you think resetting will clear fault how do you do this

you will need a code reader to do this, either cheapo, or genuine tech2

aw.....maybe HG after all then. Did you trace the leak? Anything showing in the engine bay? Any smell of burnt coolent?

Good plugs and coil pack, only thing left to check on ignition is wiring to coil pac. Is the connector ok? Not broken or cracked? Any corrosion on the contacts? Bare wires etc.

 Just clearing the codes will not clear the fault. If it was running ok the codes would still be there and still need clearing. Car will run with old codes present.

thanks for that I will have a look this morning to see if anything obvious on loom.
nothing obvious on the water front but when i was cleaning out the lower breather pipe (the one from near exhaust) it had a slight milky gunge even though oil ok are you thinking worse and if so how big a job to change head gasket

started car this morning smoke pouring out of back steam coming from rear of engine smell of coolant and slight milkyness in top of cap I think that means HG so next question how much is this going to cost me? too busy to do it myself so can anyone give me an idea, my friend has recommended a reliable mechanic.

Sorry to hear that.  I've read its not too bad a job on the 4 pot. Daz(Darth loo knee) on here may be able to help. But preston is a long ways from his native Stoke.
