Is it possible to change the HBV from above with scuttle off or is it easier from underneath :question

From what i've read on here Rob, it is done from above with the scuttle removed. I don't think you can access it from below, but I may be wrong? hth, regards, phil.

Right, I`ve got the scuttle off and there`s no way you can get to the HBV. Question, is it doable off axle stands or is it an up in the air jobbie. Gotta get this done ASAP, dumps the coolant within a couple of miles and the car`s bloody freezing.

If I can get to it from axle stands Yes, just wondering if the bloody thing is reachable. Had one done about 12 years back on a 4-pot (when I wasn`t as informed as now) and it was up on a 4-poster

Hi rob i did my 4 pot from the top - removed scuttle- removed water resvoir to give me a bit more room

Seems to be a bit more room on the 2.2, mine`s a 2.0. By "water resevoir" if you mean the coolant bottle, can`t see how you get better access. Been under and car needs to be up at least 18" to access the pipe clips. Looks like garage jobbie on a 4-poster

On the V6, after you have taken the skuttle off, if you undo three or four screws & the electrical plug the whole wiper mechanism comes out.

Don't know if that helps on the 4-pot.

I have never done it but i always thought it was done from above with wiper scuttle removed for easier access  :-/

I`ll try that in the morning Andy. With only  the scuttle off you can just about see the vac pipe on the top of the HBV no chance of getting your hands in there. It seems to hang lower on mine than the V6, measuring roughly from bottom of gearbox
to the HBV is about 18" but even on axle stands the car isn`t high enough to get decent access

I've done 2.0 one - it was a mixture of fettling underneith and above.

I did it on Tunnie's drive, on ramps

On a 4-pot the HBV is on the side of the engine, near the back. Access is generally poor, I found it easiest to get to from underneath with the car on ramps or stands. You need long arms with an extra joint halfway along the forearm. An extra pair of hands from above helps when trying to push hoses back on.
