99T 3.0 Elite Estate. Clunky Gear Change.

Hi Everyone,

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong section.

The box on my 3.0 elite sometimes changes gears with a thud.
The box can be fine for a week and then misbehave and then go into limp mode.

If I turn off the car and re-start all is usually well again.

My local VX dealer fitted a new switch £350 but the problem remained so the old switch was put back again.

I've had the car since a year old (17,000 miles) and have full VX history. The car now has 94,000 miles.

I may well sell the car but I don't think I could get a realistic price with this fault present.

Would it be worth paying to have the fault fixed in relation to the price I could expect to sell for?

Any ideas on how to fix and how much it would cost would be much appreciated.

Could just be the box wants an oil (Atf) top up

could possibly be the thrust washer....box off to change.

Check the fluid level first ;)

I'll be pretty upset if the atf is low because the car has full VX history apart from the last service carried out by a local indy.

Is it easy to check and top-up the fluid?

VX will NEVER touch the autobox in any service, designed as 'sealed' unit.

there is a level plug on the side of the box sump, no dipstick unfortunately.

the correct level is the plug, with the car flat, and running, so not the easiest to check, and you need fluid to add really....


when i do mine, I jack the (running) car up, fill to the plug, then lower to flat, some will run out as Ive filled at an angle, then jack up again and replace the plug.

Even though its supposed to be a sealed unit at 94000 miles I would change the gearbox oil and filter anyway :y

If I changed the fluid, does anyone know how much the gearbox holds?

I have a pela style pump and could suck out the atf and then replenish.

No, you need to drop both the sumps, remove/clean then replace the filter, check front sump for 'bit's of plastic. About 7 litres of new Dexron 3 (it holds more but not all will come out)
You said a 'thud', was this between 2nd & 3rd, ie after the revs 'flare' then 'thud' ?

If you are buying ATF, most of us join OPIE oils where we get a club discount (see parts for sale section)

the fluid of choice is Fuchs Titan 4000  :y
